It was my first time spending Spring Festival in China with my host family. Spring Festival is highly valued by every Chinese family. Preparations began a week before the festival. First, the house was cleaned from top to bottom. My host mother Mrs. Chen said this was to sweep away the dirt of the past year and get ready for the new year.
Next, the Chinese character Fu was attached upside down to our front door. It is believed that when Fu is put upside down, happiness arrives. The character looked really cool.
The doctor was writing a note at her desk when he came in. "Sorry, I'm just finishing something. I'm afraid we've been very busy this morning." She then turned to the man. "So, what's the problem?" she asked. "Well, I've been having a bit of a crisis, you know, lots of problems," replied the man. "And I've been doing a lot of work." "Hmm, you're looking very pale." The doctor started to examine him. "Well, everything is working OK," she announced afterwards. "You have slightly high blood pressure and you're breathing quite heavily, but otherwise everything's fine."
When people started creating their own avatars, they discovered that they were going to have the power to create new identities that did not look or act like their real selves at all. They could dress their avatars in fancy clothes, or they could try being someone of the opposite sex, and call themselves "Andy" instead of "Anna"! When Internet users realised that their avatars would be seen by many people, not just their friends, they started having more than one avatar: a sensible one for work; a friendly, good-looking one for meeting people; and a silly one for having fun. Avatars let you express yourself and they give you lots of room for creativity.
The word industry refers to all the businesses involved in supplying a certain product or service. All kinds of jobs belong to one industry or another.
People who work in the construction industry include those who work on building sites and those who produce building materials. The catering industry does not just refer to restaurants but to all businesses involving food and drinks. The publishing industry involves those businesses which provide materials both printed and online. The fashion industry involves all the people who work with clothes, from designing to making and even modeling.
The perfect host is the one who saves his guest from embarrassment whatever the cost. When Edward VII became king of England in 1901, he was already nearly 60 years old. He liked travelling, meeting people, and eating well. In short, he liked having a good time.
One evening he was entertaining the ruler of a small island in the Pacific. The menu included asparagus, which his guest had never eaten before. Asparagus is by nature tender and tasty at one end, but gets tougher and difficult to eat at the other end. Usually people leave the part which is difficult to eat on their plates.
Perhaps one of the best-known Japanese martial arts today is karate. But did you know that its roots are derived from Fujian Province? In the 14th century, a community of Chinese migrants from Fujian settled in what was then the kingdom of Okinawa. The Chinese migrants used to gather in a park to enjoy cultural activities - one of which was kung fu. This soon caught the attention of local youths, who started learning kung fu from their Chinese neighbours.
We see a woman swimming at night in a dark sea. Suddenly she is pulled underwater. She surfaces, cries in fear, then disappears forever. This is the opening scene from the 1975 film Jaws, showing a shark attack. It tells the story of a great white shark that attacks and kills swimmers. Jaws was a great success, attracting huge audiences and winning many awards. It strengthened people's long-held idea of the great white shark as a dangerous animal.
Mr. Robert Lynd once said of Jane Austen's characters: "They are people in whose lives a slight fall of snow is an event." Even at the risk of appearing to this fair and witty reviewer as another Mr. Woodhouse, I must insist that last night's fall of snow here was an event. I was nearly as excited about it this morning as the children, whom I found all looking through the window at the magic outside and talking away as excitedly as if Christmas had suddenly come round again.
This book is about dying, but it is not pessimistic. Indeed, it was a pleasant surprise to find that this book is filled with joy and hope. Morrie's bravery towards the end of his life is inspirational and has made me value my own life more.
The book made me stop and think about how much I am influenced by popular culture and the importance of creating my own values based on love and open communication. Morrie's reflections on love and friendship made me think about my life and all the good friends that I've lost touch with along the way.
As Victor Hugo once said, "Laughter is the sun that drives winter from the human face", and up to now nobody has been able to do this better than Charlie Chaplin. He brightened the lives of Americans and British through two world wars and the hard years in between. He made people laugh at a time when they felt depressed, so they could feel more content with their lives.
Interviewer: So are most of the new great inventions tech-based?
Richard: A lot, yes. For example, advances in virtual reality and wearable tech, as well as the flexible battery, mean we should soon be seeing further developments. In addition, important advances have been made in medicine and environmental science thanks to increasing computer power.
Interviewer: Can you give us some examples?
Richard: Sure. New inventions like 3D printers have been used to make replacement hearts and bone parts. In terms of the environment, it is now possible to create an intelligent walking house. It is capable of using GPS technology to travel to different places, with computing technology controlling its "legs". What's more, huge advances in solar technology mean it can be eco-friendly, too.
I've been moving from one city to the next because of my dad's job. We started in Hong Kong, then moved to Beijing, then Singapore, and then San Francisco.
Now we live in London. I love city life because it's full of opportunities for culture, recreation, education and entertainment.
In London, my home is very close to museums, the zoo, cinemas and community centres, so I have lots to do in my free time. Also, as I live close to public libraries and bookshops, I always have a good book to read. And if I'm ever bored. I can easily find a stable Internet connection.
On average, Chinese Internet users each spend two hours a day on social media: a total of 730 hours each year.
The average age of social media users in China in 2017 was 33.1 years old, as against 32.4 in 2016 and 31.2 in 2015.
The top four negative aspects of social media as ranked by Chinese users are: reduced time for reading printed books, poorer eyesight, privacy and information security concerns, and reduced sleep time.
Besides, when we incorporate humour as part of our life attitude, it can have far-reaching effects. What does "far-reaching effects" mean? It means that it will have a great influence on how we live! We all know that if we are in a bad mood, we are likely to express negative attitudes and feelings; and this makes those around us down, too. But if we always try to be positive and funny, people will enjoy our company and feel energized.
Dragon Boat Festival celebrations take place in China on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. They are held in memory of Qu Yuan, a poet and statesman in Ancient China. It was the first traditional Chinese festival added to UNESCO's List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Thanksgiving is celebrated mainly in North America, in October or November. Traditionally, it was a chance to give thanks for a good harvest. Now, it is also a time for families to get together for a big dinner.
Hi Fang Lan,
How's your life in Canada? I hope you have adapted well to the new situation and are enjoying your new school.
I love my new senior secondary school. It's much bigger than my junior secondary school and there's a huge gym! Do you remember Xie Zijun? Guess what --- we are in the same school! It's always good to have a friend, right? Life in senior secondary school is very different from that in junior secondary school. You know, we don't have a fixed classroom! We go to different classes for different subjects and also for different levels. I am in the same class with Zijun for English and physics but in different classes for Chinese and maths.
All the best!
Wang Ying
Much has been written about the wonders of the World Wide Web. There are countless articles telling us how the Internet has made our life more convenient. We no longer have to wait in line or carry cash around when we go shopping. We can get the most updated information from large databases. We can download software, documents, and images whenever we need them. But the Internet has done much more for people than simply make life more convenient. People's lives have been changed by online communities and social networks.
After another day on the train, eventually they were back in an urban area, the city of Winnipeg. From there, they travelled through the night, and woke up in Ontario - a land of forests and lakes. The train thundered on, through the rolling hills. The bushes and maple trees outside their windows were red, gold, and orange, and there was frost on the ground, confirming that autumn had arrived in Canada.
Night came again, and the train turned south towards Toronto. When they woke up the next morning and pulled back the curtain, they could see the wide stretch of Lake Huron—one of the four Great Lakes on Ontario's southern border. It was not until 9:30 am. that they finally reached the capital of Ontario, Toronto. All in all, their trip from Vancouver to Toronto had taken a duration of four days.
Music gave me happiness. When I listened to music, it made my spirits fly like a kite in the wind. Music gave me strength and brought me relief. It was the rock I leant on to become strong and to get through those hard times. Moreover, music gave me hope and a sense of satisfaction. It became my best friend. It spoke words of encouragement to the deepest part of my being.
Interviewer: Today our guest is Steve Fox. He's here to talk about cultural influences on American food. Welcome, Steve!
Steve: Thank you. It's nice to be here.
Interviewer: When it comes to American food, some say no food was ever invented in America. What do you think?
Steve: Hmm. That's not really true. For example, some say the hamburger comes from Hamburg in Germany, but they're wrong. The recipe for the meat in a hamburger may have come from Germany, but the final hamburger we know today was definitely created by Americans.
I'm here in Sydney! Since I arrived, my friend has brought me to my first open-air barbecue and has also shared many different but yummy meals with me, so my first impressions of Australia have been all about food! A lot of typical Australian food, such as the Sunday roast, is originally British. Bakeries, fast-food joints, butcher shops, cafes, and restaurants everywhere provide some of the premier food experiences in the world. The influence of Asian cultures, on the other hand, led to the introduction of bean curd and Asian herbs, along with Australian versions of foods like the Chinese-inspired dim sum.
In the late 1950s, inspired by the ink wash painter Qi Baishi, the Shanghai Animation Film Studio began to explore ways to transform traditional Chinese paintings into cartoon form. In 1960, the first ink wash animation film Tadpoles Searching for Their Mother was born and won international acclaim. After that, Cowboy's Flute was completed in 1963 and won a gold award at an international film festival. In 1988, Feeling from Mountain and Water, a masterpiece of ink wash animation, was created.
Debbie: Where have you been? You missed the announcement about the music festival.
John: I was at the doctor's office. Music festival?
Frank: Yes, it's going to be next month on the school sports field. John, you can play the piano. How about playing it at the festival?
John: Well, I'd rather play the violin. I can play Liang Zhu.
Frank: Wow! Sounds good. What about you, Debbie?
Debbie: Actually, I don't have much musical ability. I'd prefer just to help out with the crowds.
Frank: You can sell tickets or work at a food stand.
John: So can I assume that the aim of the festival is to raise money?
Debbie: Yes. All of the money will go to charity.
John: Well, if it's for a good cause, everyone should take part!
The milu deer, one of China's most beloved animals, is also one of its strangest. How else could you describe a creature that has the face of a horse, the hoofs of a cow, the antlers of a red deer, and the tail of a donkey?
The history of the species is nearly as strange as its body. The milu deer used to be common in China long ago. Like other deer, they lived together and ate grass as well as the soft parts of trees, such as small branches. However, milu deer were often hunted for food or sport in the past. The Ming and Qing dynasties did not protect them and many were killed. That is how the milu deer disappeared from China.
"Hello, my name is Henri. I'm a student at the university nearby," he said, "and 1 was wondering where you are from." The girls told him they were on a train trip across Canada and that they had only one day in Montreal. "That's too bad," he said. "Montreal is a city with wonderful restaurants and clubs. Most of us speak both English and French, but the city has French culture and traditions. We love good coffee, good bread and good music."
There are two kinds of voices: the inner voice and the outer voice. Your inner voice expresses your personal opinions, while the outer voice tells you about opinions from what you hear or read. Although your inner voice can be useful, it can also get in the way of learning. If you keep paying too much attention to it, you risk missing important information. Instead, active learners are open-minded and focus on what the speaker/writer is saying, not on what their brain is saying in the background. In this way, they are in a better position to make decisions.
Cloning has always been with us and is here to stay. It is a way of making an exact copy of another animal or plant. It happens in plants when gardeners take cuttings from growing plants to make new ones. It also happens in animals when twins identical in sex and appearance produced from the same original egg.
Dear Mr. Jenson,
I am writing on behalf of the school's Student Union. As you may know, we are running a school-wide public speaking competition, and the final will take place at the lecture hall on 10 May (9 am-12 pm). I am writing to ask whether you would be willing to help us judge the final competition.
Since March, we have already had two rounds of the competition, with more than 100 students. Now we have 12 students left for the final. The topic of the final speech is "Education for Innovation". Students have to give a five-minute speech on the topic in English.
I sincerely hope you can come. If you have any questions, please do let me know.
Yours sincerely,
Zhao Zheng
President, Student Union
Opponents of factory farming say that it is cruel to the animals. For instance, many farm animals are kept in small spaces where they can hardly move. People who fight for animal rights claim that the animals suffer terrible stress. In addition to this, factory farming has a negative impact on the environment because it creates a lot of waste products, and uses a lot of chemicals to control insects and drugs to treat diseases
To sum up, despite producing cheap food, factory farming is bad for the planet and for the animals themselves. In my opinion, we should try to reduce this kind of farming, although we should have to pay for our eggs and meet.
Most people assume that the human brain is set on "automatic" — that means it learns all by itself. But this isn't always true. We need to train ourselves to be better learners — to actively take part in the learning process and to reflect on what we have learnt. These kinds of learning behaviours are called "active learning". I suggest doing five things to take an active role in your learning.
#### Social Media Detox
Today marks the last day of the Social Media Detox, Brenton High's fundraising campaign for new sports equipment. At the start of the detox, over one hundred students had been persuaded to stop using social media, in ANY form, for seven days. This meant no messaging friends, no posting photos, no blogging — nothing. They had been promised money by family and friends for each day spent without using social media. They were excited. They were nervous. But could they do it?
Life here in Nashville is as interesting as I thought it would be. My host family are big fans of country music, so I can always rely on them to introduce me to some great songs. I love learning about country music and I keep asking them questions about it all the time! It turns out that country music became popular right here in the south of America in the 1940s and then spread across the nation. It grew out of such music types as the blues and folk music, so the musicians use many similar instruments. such as the guitar.
Our comfort foods are highly individual. They vary from person to person, depending on our own unique experiences that have shaped our lives. If we grow up eating certain foods in our family, then those foods tend to be linked with positive emotions. For example, we often connect chicken soup with a happy childhood and its flavour becomes tied up with the feeling of being taken care of. When we eat it again, we unlock memories of a time when we were loved and looked after, and this cheers us up.
The Amazon rainforest crosses into eight countries, including Brazil and Peru, and one overseas region of France, all on the South American continent. With an area of around 6 million square kilometres, the Amazon rainforest is more than half the size of China. The Amazon River, from which the rainforest gets its name, is close to 6,400 kilometres in length - roughly 100 kilometres longer than the Yangtze River. On its journey from the mountains to the ocean, the river supports many different ecosystems. They give this area the richest biodiversity on the Earth: one in ten known species in the world can be found here.
Pompeii was a typical Roman city. In its little shops, its tiny palaces, its forum, its wine bars, its theatre - in the energy and skill of its people, you saw a model of the whole Roman Empire. Trading ships bringing imports to the city or carrying exports overseas, along with golden pleasure boats for the rich, were crowded together in the glassy water of the port. The boats of the fishermen moved rapidly in all directions. Above all, the cloud-capped top of Mount Vesuvius appeared. Its ashy rocks, now dark, now light, told a story of past eruptions that might have warned the city what was to come.
"Don't judge a book by its cover," the old saying goes. Unfortunately, as a teenager, that is often exactly what you do to yourself. Dark thoughts about your physical appearance can hang over you all the time like a rain cloud. Do I look fat in these jeans? Do others think I am too short? Is everyone laughing at my new hairstyle behind my back? These thoughts can have a negative effect on people of any shape or size, both male and female, and it is important to guard against the causes behind them.
Great to hear from you! Yes, we had a fantastic holiday. Mum, Dad and I went camping in Beidaihe. In fact, we stayed at the same campsite as we did ten years ago. Dad showed me a photo we had taken then - just see how time flies!
Dad has changed quite a bit! In his thirties, he was quite thin and pale, and he had red, bushy hair. Nowadays, he's well-built and tanned. He's always had a square jaw, but now he's grown a beard. Strangely, his beard is still red even though his hair is turning grey!
Mum looks almost the same, though. She still has smooth skin and straight black hair, and jogging has kept her slim and fit.
I still have light skin and black hair, of course. But I usually wear my hair in a ponytail these days as it has got a lot longer. Mum says I had cute rosy cheeks, but now I have freckles. I think they are kind of cute too, right?
Can't wait to see you back in school!
Tommy: What do you like to do at weekends, Millie?
Millie: I like to visit the museums.
Tommy: How often do you visit a museum?
Millie: About twice a month. What about you, Tommy?
Tommy: I like to go on picnics with my family.
Millie: How often do you go on a picnic?
Tommy: About once a month.
Millie: That's great!
A: You are the new, aren't you?
B: Yes, you are Tony, aren't you?
A: It is really crowed here, isn't it?
B: Yes, it is.
Jane: Weilun, can you tell me something about your hometown, Yunnan?
Zhou Weilun: Sure. What would you like to know?
Jane: What's the best time to go there?
Zhou Weilun: I think you can go anytime. You know, Kunming is the Spring City. The weather there is always fine all year round.
Jane: What places should I visit in Yunnan?
Zhou Weilun: You should visit Dali and Lijiang. And you shouldn't miss Xishuangbanna. It's wonderful.
Our school gave us free tickets to an opera because it can help us learn more about different art forms. Since Millie also planned to take the underground, we went to the theatre together. When we arrived, Kitty had already been there. Soon Simon and Daniel came.
Since it was still early. we went to buy some drinks. We'd better be quick since the opera will begin in 20 minutes, "Kitty suggested We came back quickly. Then we waited for Amy outside the theatre.
''The opera is going to start in a minute. Please come inside, "the man at the door said, but Am did not appear. After a while, we saw Amy running towards us, "I'm late because there was too much traffic, "she said, out of breath. Then we hurried into the theatre. Since the opera had just started, we did not miss much. The opera lasted for one and a half hours. We did not get bored at all because it was really wonderful.
Dad: What will tigers do if they live in the wild?
Millie: Tigers will hunt for their own food if they live in the wild.
Dad: What will tigers do if they have babies?
Millie: Tigers will live as a family if they have babies.
Dad: What will male wolves do if there is danger?
Millie: Male wolves will protect their families if there is danger.
Ms Li: Welcome back to school, everyone! First of all, come and look in the lost and found box! There are a lot of things in it. Whose bag is this?
Lingling: Oh sorry! It's mine. Are my crayons there too?
Ms Li: Are these crayons yours?
Lingling: Yes, they are and this eraser too. Thank you.
Ms Li: Whose tapes are these?
Daming: They're mine.
Ms Li: Here's a purple wallet!
Tony: It's mine. Look! Here's my name "Tony"! Thank you.
Ms Li: You're welcome! Look at this nice watch. Is it yours too, Daming?
Daming: No, it isn't. I think it's Betty's.
Lingling: Yes, it's hers.
Ms Li: Everyone, please be careful with your things from now on.
Paming: Here are some nice gloves. Whose gloves are they?
Ms Li: Let me see. Oh, they're mine! Thank

Different countries have different customs. When you travel in other countries, you should know the customs there. In Japan, when you enter someone's home, you should take off your shoes. In Brazil, people never go out with their hair wet. In Indonesia, you mustn't point to anything with your foot. Don't eat with your left hand in Islam, and don't touch a child on the head in Thailand.

Peter: Let's have a look in the South Shopping Centre.
Judy: All right, but watch the steps as you go in.
Peter: Thanks. Let's go this way.
Judy: OK. But watch out! The floor is wet.
Peter: Here's a shop. Let's go in.
Judy: All right, but be careful! Don't break anything.
Peter: Oh, I like this vase. I' Il just pick it up and, oops…
Judy: Look out! You almost dropped it.
Doris: So you live in Hamburg. Hans?
Hans: Yes, I'm a Hamburger. Have you ever met a Hamburger?
Doris: Yes, I met one yesterday at a fast-food restaurant, and I ate it.
Hans: Ah, yes. I've heard that joke before, Doris.
Doris: Sorry, Hans. Tell me, how long have you lived in Hamburg?
Hans: Since 1996. How long have you lived in Shanghai?
Doris: For 14 years. I was born here.
1900, Edwin Moore had an idea. He would make something useful that people would want to buy. What was that thing? It was a push-pin. A push-pin is a "pin" that you "push". You push it into walls or bulletin boards. Why? To hold posters, maps and other papers. There is a push pin holding up this piece of paper.
Edwin Moore lived in United States. He made his first push pins by himself. For a little money, he bought some supplies and rented a room. Every afternoon and evening, he made push-pins; every morning, he sold them. Then, he bought more supplies and made more push-pins. Moore's first push-pins cost two dollars for 144 pins. That's cheap!
Before the printing press, somebody wrote every book by hand with a pen. It was slow! After the printing press, people could make many books quickly. Was this important? Yes! The printing press let more people read more books. What was in the books? Information. Today, you can still find information in books. You can also find information on the Internet. Is the Internet important? Yes!
The Internet lets people find and use information very quickly. Find facts about the printing press and about the Internet in this unit. Think about this question: Which one did more to change the world?
Daniel: What would it be like to live on Mars?
Amy: There's less gravity on Mars. We'd probably need to wear special boots.
Daniel: Yes. And we might need sleeping bags too.
Amy: I agree. Also, there's no fruit or vegetables, so we would have to eat dried food.
Daniel: Well... that sounds quite boring! But there would be no pollution on Mars.
Amy: I hope so.
Neil Armstrong was born on the august 5,1930 in Ohio, the USA. He became interested in flying when he took his first flight at the age of six. He received his student pilot's license when he was 16. Armstrong joined the navy in 1949 and served as a pilot for 3 years. In 1955, he became a test pilot. He flew over 1,100 hours and tested all types of aircraft.
In 1962, he was chosen to become an astronaut. In 1966, he went into space as command pilot of Gemini 8. He and David Scott managed to join two spacecraft together for the first time in space. However, on their way back to the earth, the spacecraft began spinning out of control. Armstrong received the order to cut the flight short. He successfully brought the spacecraft down into the western Pacific Ocean.
Amy: Would robots have brains in the future, Daniel?
Daniel: Yes, they would. So they could do whatever they're asked to.
Amy: That sounds useful. How could robots help us?
Daniel: They could do dangerous jobs like putting out fires or working on high buildings.
Amy: That's great! Could robots help me and you in any way?
Daniel: Of course. they could help us with our homework.
Amy: Wow! I'd like to have one!
Dear Diana,
Last week, my friend David came round with a new computer game and asked to play it on my dad's computer. I was worried, because 1 should ask my dad before use his computer. He uses it for his work, and 1 can only use it for my homework. The reason is that he thinks something will go wrong if I play games on it.
Well, while my dad was out, we decided to try out David's game. We copied it to the computer, and after we finished playing, we took it off the computer. However, when I started the computer again to check if everything was OK, some of my dad's documents were missing. Then, when my dad used the computer last night, he was really angry. He could no longer find the documents anywhere! They were very important.
I did not tell him about the computer game because 1 did not want him to be angry with me. Now 1 feel terrible. 1 am not sure whether a computer repair shop can get the documents back. Should I tell him about the computer game? Should 1 pay to repair it?
Yours,
Steve
A charity concert was held in London last week. International pop singers and bands such as Backstreet Boys, Robbie Williams and Tracey G sang to about 65,000 people at the concert. David Beckham, the famous football player, welcomed everybody to the concert and after that, Backstreet Boys started the show with "Everybody"! Fifteen minutes later, George Michael came onto the stage and sang his popular songs from the 90s. The evening ended with cheering and shouting as Robbie Williams sang "Let Me Entertain you".
One of the most famous cartoons in China is called Havoc in Heaven. Havoc in Heaven was created in the 1960s by the Wan brothers. It tells the story of the Monkey King. The cartoon shows many Chinese characteristics. For example, it was made from band-drawn Chinese pictures, and some of the sound effects are from Beijing Opera. This cartoon has won many awards at home and abroad, and has influenced cartoons throughout Asia since it was produced.
Shanghai Expo: Dream inspires future cities
What will cities of the future look like? At the 2010 Shanghai Expo, countries around the world displayed their dreams of future cities.
The UK displayed the ZED Pavilion. "ZED" means "zero energy development". The idea of this building is to show that we can have more environmentally friendly buildings and houses. Shanghai displayed its eco-home. This house is built completely of recycled and reused materials. It has a solar power system and provides all its own power.
Wang Damin is a fisherman. Although he is over 65, he is very fit and still enjoys working. Damin uses cormorants to catch fish. Cormorants are large black birds. They are good at catching fish because they can swim well. They can dive down and stay under the water for up to two minutes. Damin usually sets off in the late afternoon and gets the cormorants ready for work. First, he ties a piece of grass around their necks to stop them from eating big fish. Then when Damin’s boat reaches the right place in the river, he pushes them into the river. Damin uses several ways to attract fish. During the day, he jumps up and down on his boat. After dark, he hangs a light on a post at the front of the boat. The cormorants bring the fish back to the boat. The fish are then taken and thrown into a big basket by Damin.
Science fiction (or "sci - fi") is a popular kind of story found in many books, comics and films. The War of the Worlds is a famous science fiction story. It is about aliens from Mars (called "Martians") attacking the Earth. It was written by the English writer, H. G. Wells, who is called the "Father of Science Fiction". Many people in America thought it was real when they heard the story on the radio in 1938!

How sayings about dogs have changed?
In the old days, people kept dogs, but they used them for hunting or to help with farm work. Dogs often had a very difficult life. So we have sayings such as "to lead a dog's life" or "as sick as a dog".
Feelings towards dogs began to change when life became more prosperous for people. People came to see dogs as friends or companions. Today we call a dog "man's best Friend" and tell people "Love me, love my my dogs".
How do writers decide which words belong in a dictionary? This is not an easy question to answer because it is not easy to write a dictionary. Languages are not dead; they are alive so dictionaries have to change as languages changes. So, how do dictionary writers or editors decided which word to include in a dictionary? The number of times people use a word helps the writer or editors to decide if that word belongs in a dictionary.
Every autumn, millions of these beautiful insects with fine black and orange wings begin a long and difficult journey. Somehow, they manage to travel around 4,000 kilometres south and find their way to California or Mexico. However, until recently no one knew how they did this.
A team of scientists led by Professor Eli Shlizerman at the University of Washington has now found the answer. They have found out that the monarch is able to tell the time of day. It uses its eyes to measure the position of the sun. These two pieces of information-the time of day and the point where the sun is in the sky- allowed the butterfly to determine the way to go. Eventually, it manages to reach the places where it will spend the winter.

Nowadays, we can move around the world and still stay in touch with the people that we want to remain friends with. Social media tools let us see what our friends are up to and maintain friendships. All you need is a wi-fi connection. The digital age also enables us to find people who share our interests, such as collecting model cars or playing an unusual instrument. Whatever our hobbies, the Internet can connect us with others who also enjoy doing them, even if they live on the other side of the world.
Walk and Talk is a group that meets every Sunday. It is free to join. Walk and Talk is perfect for anyone whose weekends need some excitement. We are all teenagers who love walking and making new friends.
We want you to join us! The next walk which is open to new members is on 22 July. You can also bring your friends. However, anyone whom you bring must be over 12 years old. Come along and join the fun!
Visiting hospitals and other health care facilities, we clown doctors work together with medical professionals. On a typical day, we spend our time cheering up patients, their families, and more often than not, the hospital staff, too! We do this by doing magic tricks, singing songs, telling stories, and, of course, telling silly jokes. Some children, though, don't feel like laughing, especially if they're in pain. We have to be very sensitive and work closely with the doctors and nurses, who keep us updated on each patient.
The United Nations (UN) is an organization that aims to promote international cooperation. It was founded in 1945 and has about 190 member states. This is the reason why the UN has a number of translators and interpreters since international meetings in the UN are attended by people who speak so many different languages. Translators are people who usually work with written language, while interpreters work with spoken language. Meetings where only two languages are used may need only one interpreter, while larger events where leaders from many countries gather may need over 70 interpreters.
The word “think” was also a difficult one for Helen because it is such an abstract concept. However, one day as she was working on a simple task, she had a breakthrough. She was making necklaces with the help of Anne when she noticed that she had made some mistakes. Because she was uncertain how to fix them, she stopped to think carefully. As she did this, Anne touched Helen’s forehead and wrote the word “think” on her hand. “In a flash I knew that the word was the name of the process that was going on in my head.”
Today, it is estimated that about 60 percent of domestic rice consumption in China is comprised of crops generated from Yuan's hybrid strains, and his strains have allowed China's farmers to produce around 200 million tons of rice per year. Yuan's innovation has helped feed not just China, but many other countries that depend on rice as well such as India and Vietnam. Because of his invaluable contributions, Yuan Longping has received numerous awards both in China and abroad.
Firstly, talking online is no replacement for face-to-face Robert contact—images really cannot replace a real-life smile or hug. According to a parenting expert, Denise Daniels, communicating through a screen makes it more difficult for children to concentrate or show kindness to others. As we know, important social skills are developed through direct contact with other people. It is these skills that enable us to develop lifelong friendships.
Secondly, the Internet can make people self-centred—not thinking of anyone or anything but themselves. For example, instead of having proper conversations with their friends, some people are only concerned with their online popularity—How many “likes” did I get? How many followers do I have? —though we know that the number of “likes” or followers cannot compare to having long-term and rewarding friendships.
Some body language has many different uses. Perhaps the best example is smiling. A simile can help us get through difficult situations and find friends in a world of strangers. A smile can break down barriers. We can use a smile to apologise, to greet someone, to ask for help, or to start a conversation. Experts suggest smiling at yourself in the mirror to make yourself feel happier and stronger. And if we are feeling down or lonely, there is nothing better than seeing the smiling face of a good friend.
At the Nobel Prize Lecture on 7 December, 2015, an 84-year-old Chinese woman walked slowly on to the stage. She began to talk about the life-saving drug, artemisinin, which she had discovered with the help of her team in the 1970s. The woman was Tu Youyou, the first Chinese female scientist to be awarded a Nobel Prize for her work. A scientist who was on the Nobel Prize Committee called Hans Forssberg explained that "the discovery of artemisinin has led to the development of new drugs which have saved the lives of millions". When thanking the Committee for the honour, Tu Youyou said, "This is not only an honour for myself, but also recognition and encouragement for all scientists in China."
British and American English are different in many ways. The first and most obvious way is the vocabulary. There are hundreds of different words which are not used on the other side of the Atlantic, or which are used with a different meaning. Some of these words are well known, American drive automobiles down freeways and fill up with gas; the British drive cars along motorways and fill up with petrol. As a tourist, you will need to use the underground in London or the subway in the town by taxi (British) or cab (American).
Standing with one's hands on one's hips shows that a person is angry in many cultures, such as Malaysia, Argentina, and Mexico.
Many Mexicans like to touch people on the arm. This shows that they want to be friendly.
When communicating with someone from Tanzania or Kenya, do not use your left hand when giving or receiving things like a business card or gift.
In Vietnamese culture, the head is considered the most important part of the body. Only parents or an important person can touch your head.
If a Lebanese person stands close to you, do not feel that they are entering your personal space. Personal space is relatively smaller in Lebanon and many other places.
In Korean culture, one must be careful not to show too much emotion through facial expressions, except in very casual situations. Koreans may tend to distrust people who use exaggerated facial expressions, or may misunderstand what those facial expressions mean.
People of Puerto Rico move their noses to say, "What's going on here?"
English is a crazy language. There is no egg in eggplant nor ham in hamburger, neither apple nor pine in pineapple. English muffins weren't invented in England nor French flies in France. Sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads, which aren't sweet, are meat. We find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig. And why is it that writers write but ... hammers don't ham?
One growing problem is tourists who want to prove that they have visited a destination. Tourists have used paint, rock, or even keys to write on the Luxor Temple in Egypt, the Colosseum in Rome, Stonehenge in the UK, memorial stones at the bottom of Qomolangma, and many, many other places. Thousands of tourist sites are being destroyed by tourists who “love them to death”. I have three words for people like this: please stop it. If you want to leave a mark on the world, do it by changing someone's life with kindness and love. Pass kindness to future generations, not destruction.
Hi there! My name is Asha and I'm from Tanzania. Like most teenagers, I start my day early and end it late. After school, I study at a night school to prepare for the university entrance exam. When I have time off, I prefer to be outdoors. I love nature and animals. I'm quite upset about how we treat the environment, so I do my best to help. I volunteer to plant trees and I'm a member of our school's Nature Club.
Thank you, Mrs. Archer, and thanks again to all of our guests. A former UN official once said, “Saving our planet lifting people out of poverty, advancing economic growth...these are one and the same fight.” The fortunes of our environment and our economy are inseparable. It’s our duty to protect the environment while we aim for economic development.
It’s our duty to leave a better, cleaner and healthier planet to our children. It’s our duty to build a human community with a shared future.

Born in 1770, William Wordsworth was one of the leader poets of the Romantic Movement in England. Growing up in the beautiful Lake District, Wordsworth had a childhood that was perfect for a developing poet. Educated at Cambridge, Wordsworth received his degree in 1791. He spent a lot of time touring in Europe. Travelling obviously provided Wordsworth with plenty of ideas for his poems. In 1795, he met Samuel Taylor Coleridge and the two talented young men became close friends. Meeting Coleridge had a huge impact on Wordsworth. Lyrical Ballads, a collection of poems wrote together with Coleridge, was Wordsworth's first great work. It was published in 1798 and marked the start of the Romantic era in poetry. Wordsworth explained that they wanted to write poetry that ordinary people could use to express their feelings. Many of the poems in the collection were about returning to nature. Like other Romantics, Wordsworth preferred to live in the country rather than in the city.
Dear Talking Teens,
My daughter wants to study abroad, but I think she is too young. She is only 14. Besides, it would cost a lot of money to send her to a school in another country. I think she should finish senior high school first, and then maybe study abroad when she is in university. What do you think?
Best Wishes
Mum in Yunnan
The gesture for “OK” has different meanings in different cultures. In Japan, someone who witnesses another person employing the gesture might think it means money. In France, a person encountering an identical gesture may interpret it as meaning zero. However, you should avoid making this gesture in Brazil and Germany, as it is not considered polite.
A: I agree with the idea that a soccer player should never pretend to fall down even if it helps his or her team. You should never cheat.
B: Exactly! It's important to do the right thing.
C: Well, I don't think so. Many players do it, and they think it helps their team to win.
A: That doesn't make any sense!
B: I see what you mean, but the audience wants fair play.
C: …
W: Hi, Sam! I've decided to join the Music Club.
M: Good decision!
W: How about you? Are you going to join a club?
M: Yes. I'm wondering which one l should choose: the Acting Club or the Ballet Club?
W: I guess the question is … do you like dancing better than acting?
M: Actually, l like acting better, but my friends go to the Ballet Club and l want to be with them.
W: Hmm ... If you ask me, l think you should choose what you like.
Hi! My name is Adam and I'm a freshman at senior high school. Going from junior high school to senior high school is a really big challenge. The first week was a little confusing.
First, I had to think very carefully about which courses I wanted to take. The school adviser helped me choose the suitable ones: maths, English, chemistry, world history, and Chinese. I know that Chinese is a very difficult language, but I hope to be fluent when I graduate. My adviser recommended that I should sign up for advanced literature because I like English and I’m good at it.
Hunting and fishing have directly influenced the world’s animal populations. Some people hunt animals for food: whale meat is eaten in some parts of the world. Some people hunt animals for fashion: animal skin is used to make coats and bags. Still others hunt animals just for fun: deer are tracked and shot by people who enjoy the excitement of the sport.
China is widely known for its ancient civilisation which has continued all the way through into modern times, despite the many ups and downs in its history. There are many reasons why this has been possible, but one of the main factors has been the Chinese writing system.
At the beginning, written Chinese was a picture-based language. It dates back several thousand years to the use of longgu-animal bones and shells on which symbols were carved by ancient Chinese people. Some of the ancient symbols can still be seen in today's hanzi.
Some students are amused by something else. They spend all their time looking anywhere but at me. Then again, some students' favourite activity is they occupy themselves by staring daydreaming. With their chins on their hands, they occupy themselves by staring out of the window or up at the ceiling. They are certainly interested in something, but who knows what. The main thing is reminding distracted students that they need to pay attention in class.
After just a few months in China, Leon, an exchange student from Germany, says that he has fallen in love with Chinese culture. What impressed him first was the Chinese food. He couldn't believe how many different kinds of Chinese food there are! Something else he found impressive was that people can eat almost everything with chopsticks. Then there's China's colourful culture, from art to music, and from calligraphy to literature. How he can learn to appreciate it more deeply remains an important goal for him, as he is truly fascinated by it. Leon is also amazed by the convenience of cashless payments in China. He can go outside without any need for cash-all he needs is his mobile phone! The biggest reason why he loves China, however, is that he enjoys being with Chinese people. He has made great friends here-friends that he will still remember long after his departure.
Tornadoes are strong winds that can cause great damage. It is not easy to know where they will go, so it can be difficult to warn people what might be affected. In order to learn more about how tornadoes form and move, some brave researchers whose job is to explore the causes of tornadoes. They chase storms in order to collect more detailed information firsthand. Of course, the researchers have special equipment that can record detailed information, but they need to get close enough to use it and still keep safe from the danger.
Spring Festival is family time for us. My husband and l are both retired. We do not see our children and grandchildren very often and we miss them a lot. Weeks before Spring Festival, we start getting ready for their homecoming. Things start to get really busy. We think about what the children would like to eat, what we need to buy and what dishes need to be prepared.
Our house buzzes with activities when everyone comes home. Our grandchildren run around shouting and playing and the adults gather around the table to talk about the past year, Great fun is also enjoyed in the kitchen as jiaozi are being made. We always have jiaozi during this time, as they mean something special on this occasion -they are a sign of our wishes for health and happiness in the coming year. To me, this is Spring Festival -the joy of a family gathering.
Have you ever forgotten to lock the door of your house? Or, have you ever forgotten to switch off the TV or computer? These kinds of things happen to us all the time, waste wealth, and can sometimes lead to problems. However, in the future, we will be living in smart homes that will lock the door for us when we are away and remember to shut off the TV when we forget. These smart homes will save us energy, and provide a more comfortable environment to live in.
It was the final sprint of the Santa Barbara XV Grand Prix cyclo-cross race in Spain. Fans lined the road to the finishing line, cheering on the competitors.
Ismael Esteban, in third place, was just ahead of his competitor, Agustin Navarro, with only 300 meters to the finishing line. Esteban had been cycling as hard as he could for hours and with the finishing line in sight all the cyclists began to speed up to cross it. Then, suddenly Esteban got a puncture. What should he do? Give up or continue? Esteban threw his bike over his shoulders and raced towards the finishing line.
This is my cousin Kate.
She's a cook.
She cooks chicken.
Where?
In the kitchen, of course.
What's it like in winter?
Cold! Cold! Cold!

Amy: They feel soft and smooth.
Kitty: Yes, and red is my favourite Colour.
Amy: You look lovely in your new hat. What' sit made of?
Kitty: It's made of wool. I like it too.
Winter days are full of snow,
when trees and flowers forget to grow.
And the birds fly far away,
to find a warm and sunny day.

This afternoon, we went to Ocean Park. It isn't far from the restaurant where we ate lunch. Unfortunately, we got lost. Our taxi driver didn't know understand what we were saying. Luckily, a man who understood Putonghua told the driver where we were going. Ocean Park has a lot of marine, or ocean animals as well as some very exciting rides. Dad and I went on a ride that goes round and round very fast, Afterwards, Mum wanted to go to a market but I was too tired. Dad and I went back to the hotel and Mum went to the market by herself.
Dear Isabel,
Thank you for your last letter. Here are photos of me and my twin sister Liu Ying. As you can see, in some ways, we look the same and in some ways, we look different. We both have black eyes and black hair, although my hair is shorter than hers. We both like sports, although Liu Ying is more athletic than me. She's more outgoing and I'm quieter. I think, I'm smarter than her. My favorite subjects are physics and chemistry, and her favorite subject is PE. However, we both enjoying going to the parties.

Teahouse is one of Laoshe's most famous plays. He wrote it in1957. The play has three acts and show the lives of common people in China from the end of the nineteenth century to the middle of twentieth century. It tells us the story of Wang Lifa and the customers of his teahouse in Beijing. It describes the change in Chinese society over fifty years.
Laoshe was born in Beijing in 1899. His mother sent him to a teacher's school in 1913, after finishing school in 1918, he became a head teacher of a primary school. In 1924, Laoshe left home and went to England. He taught Chinese at a college in London and returned to China five years later. He wrote many plays, novels and short stories about people's lives, and he was named “the People's Artist”.
Most of us have probably been angry with our friends, parents or teachers. Perhaps they said something you didn't like, or maybe you felt they were unfair. Sometimes, people can stay angry for years about a small problem. When we are angry, however, we are usually the one affected.
If I become an athlete, will I be happy?
For many young people, becoming a professional athlete might seem like a dream job. If you become a professional athlete, you'll be able to make a living doing something you love. Do you think everyone enjoys their weekends? Old Henry does not. Last month, he went for a walk with Wang Wang, his cute dog. It was a nice day and Old Henry was happy. He sat down and watched Wang Wang play with a friendly black cat. Then it was time to go home. Old Henry looked for his dog. But Wang Wang wasn't there. Now Old Henry is very sad. He has no dog and no family. He doesn't want to do anything.
We are an international school for children of 5-12. Our children are from Japan, Canada and Singapore. We want a P.E. teacher to teach soccer, volleyball, and tennis. We also want a music teacher to teach guitar, piano, and violin.
Thank you for joining CCTV's Around the World show. Today, we're in Australia. It's a beautiful, sunny day! There are many people here on vacation. Some are taking photos. Others are lying on the beach. Look at this group of people playing beach volleyball. They look cool! I am surprised they can play in this heat. This is a very interesting place. The people are really very relaxed!

These changes only became possible as my memory improved. First it was stored in tubes, then on transistors and later on very small chips. As a result, I totally changed my shape. As I have grown older, I have also grown smaller. Over time my memory has developed so much that, like an elephant, I never forget anything l have been told!
You are never too young to start doing things that you don't know how to do before. For example, Tiger Woods started golfing when he was only ten months old. Mozart started writing music when he was only four years old. And Ronald, the great Brazilian soccer player, played for his national team when he was seventeen.
Do you remember Johnny Dean, the pop singer with funny glasses and long curly hair? Well, now he has a new look. He doesn't have long curly hair. He has short straight hair. And he doesn't wear glasses. But some people don't like his new look. "I don't think he's so great", says Ruth from New York, "but my mom does".
In some countries, they have summer time and winter time. In the UK, for example, their summer time starts on the last Sunday in March. At 1 a.m. on that day, the clocks in all public places in the UK are put forward an hour, from 1 a.m. to 2 a.m. BST always ends on the last Sunday in October.
The idea for the concert was started by two college students from London-- Emma Black and John Jones. Emma and John travelled around the world for a year, during their travels, they were sad to see many poor children who could not afford to go to school. When they returned to England, they wanted to do something to help these children. They spent six months planning a charity concert and they asked many popular singers and bands to perform at the concert. Emma and John's concert was a big success. It was seen on T'V and on the Internet by millions of people around the world. It set the record for having the biggest audience at a concert and it raised over 20 million dollars. Both Emma and John were amazed by the amount of money that they had raised. “We're so happy! We thought we would raise about two million, not 20 million!" Emma said. The money from the concert will be spent on food, toys, books and clothes for poor children around the world.

Last week I took a journey deep into space, to the end of the solar system, and was pulled into a black hole. Then, I took a trip to Brazil and experienced surviving an airplane crash in the jungle. Atter that. I joined some divers and went to the bottom of the ocean to see strange blind creatures that have never seen sunlight. For a break, I took part in some car racing and then skied down some of the most difficult mountains around the world. I did all this in one great day at Futuroscope.
When things go wrong as they sometimes will,
When the road you're trudging seems all up hill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest if you must, but don't you quit.
Life is strange with its twists and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure comes about
When he might have won had he stuck it out;
Don't give up though the pace seems slow—
You may succeed with another blow.
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise.

The capital city London is a great place to start, as it is an ancient port city that has a history dating all the way back to Roman times. There are countless historic sites to explore, and lots of museums with ancient relics from all over the UK. The UK is a fascinating mix of history and modern culture, with both new and old traditions. If you keep your eyes open, you will be surprised to find that you can see both its past and its present.
Warning! A box of tissues will be needed to get through this book! Morrie's reflections on love and friendship made me think about my life and all the good friends that I've lost touch with along the way. It made me realise just how much I miss them. I guess that's one of the lessons of the book - always keep in touch with the good people you meet as you go through life.
Like Mitch, Morrie makes you aware that you want to die feeling that you have lived life to the full, knowing that you are loved and have loved others as much as you could. As Morrie's favourite poet Auden said, "Love each other or perish."
It takes considerable courage to reject the easy and familiar and instead try to live closer to nature, as both Tao and Thoreau did. Their choices led them to quiet and reflective lives with fewer material desires. In today's modern world, their ideas about living simply and being at ease with nature may take us a step closer to attaining personal well-being and fulfillment.
Scientists often question accepted ideas because they want to establish the facts. Some have even questioned the story about the apple that fell on Newton's head and led him to come up with his theory of gravity. In fact, more than one account suggests that while Newton was certainly inspired by a falling apple, there is no proof that it hit him on the head.
Admittedly, fiction is often more interesting than the truth. People have been more inspired by Franklin's spirit of scientific exploration than by the facts themselves. But in science, facts should be proved by experiments and research, and we should not always believe everything we read or hear - even if it is a great story.
You also have to wonder at the unique madness of a language in which a house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it out, and in which an alarm is only heard once it goes off!
English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity of the human race. That is why when the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible. And that is why when I wind up my watch, it starts, but when I wind up this passage, it ends.
I arrived in Liberia with MSF almost three months ago. When I saw the tragic scenes on the news, I felt it was my duty as a doctor to go there and offer my help. I knew I was putting my life at risk, but I thought. "If I don't do it, who will?" It is important to remember that Ebola doesn't respect national boundaries. There are no borders for doctors, for patients or for anyone else involved in combating this terrible disease.
As a computer engineer, there's always a new challenge just around the corner! It can be quite stressful at times though, which in turn makes me feel anxious. To help deal with this, I go running as often as possibly I can. Whether I'm at the gym or on the road, my nervous energy pushes me through mile one. By the end of the run, all my stress has disappeared and I'm ready to face the next day.
Alice Brown, head teacher at Falmont Primary School, was teaching when the floor began to shake. Her students’ reaction was quick and correct - they moved under their desks, head first, and held on to the legs of the desks. At the same time, Miss Brown quickly opened the classroom door, in case it became damaged during the shaking and could not open. There were loud crashes of glass breaking and things falling to the ground, but the students remained still and waited calmly and quietly.
"If you look the right way, you can see that the whole world is a garden." These words come from the author of the book The Secret Garden, first published in 1911. At that time, only the very rich in Britain had gardens. Very soon after this, homes with gardens began to be built.
Today, millions of Brits like to say that they have "green fingers", with around half the population spending their free time gardening.
I like how technology is changing sports. Wearing the latest equipment, such as smart earphones, allows people to get the best out of their training. Using video technology to help judge our sporting competitions can make sure that no one cheats.
Best of all, instant replay facilities let us see all the action all over again. Missing our favorite sporting moments is now a thing of the past!
A: I particularly like classical Chinese literature, especially works from the Ming and Qing dynasties. I fell in love with Dream of the Red Chamber the first time I read it, and was determined to translate it into Bulgarian. Now that this dream has come true, my next goal is to translate The Romance of the Three Kingdoms.
B: In the Netherlands, the decision as to which works of Chinese literature get translated is largely influenced by the opinions of respected Sinologists. In addition, publishing houses tend to look to other countries to see which Chinese works have sold well there. I've so far translated the writings of Han Han, and I am now working on those of Xu Zechen.
My grandma is called Zhu Jimping. She is sixty-one and she lives with my grandpa in a flat in the centre of Beijing. She is a nurse and has worked part-time in the same hospital for twenty years! She loves children and animals, especially cats, although she hates their claws! Her favourite thing to eat is yogurt with honey.
She doesn't like food she has to chew too much because her teeth aren't strong! She never watches TV except for the news. Grandpa wants to get satellite TV but Grandma doesn't. Grandma has got short, grey hair and clear brown eyes. She is quite short, bit thin and she's got lots of little wrinkles on her forehead, but she's a very cheerful woman. In fact, she's always smiling. She's also very generous and helpful, Grandma is very popular with her neighbors, maybe because she is so helpful. For example, she often looks after children for people in her apartment block. Babies love sitting on her lap! She devotes a lot of her time to caring the neighbors.
Chinese artist Wu Guanzhong is known for his paintings using oils and also for those using the more traditional Chinese method of ink. According to Wu Guanzhong, his goal as an artist was to combine Western principles of art with Chinese spirit, and his passion was to seek a point at which the two could meet. To him, the important value of an artwork was reflecting the art within the life of Chinese people, and expressing love of and responsibility to his motherland. Wu Guanzhong remained interested in exploring ways of expression, with his style changed and developed throughout his career. His life's work is now inspiring artists not only in China but across the world.
Hi Jane,
I'm now back in the hotel after a fantastic day exploring Huangguoshu National Park. The park is most famous for its waterfall. Check out this video that I made - it shows the water falling into the deep valley below.
Next week we are flying to the Turpan Basin in Xinjiang, which is famous for its sweet grapes. I've heard that grapes are dried in drying houses to make raisins. The walls of the houses have a lot of holes in them to allow wind to pass through. How clever! We are also going to ride camels, the ships of the desert. It sounds like I will be sailing on a sea of sand!
See you soon.

*The Road Not Taken* is one of America's best-loved poems and I think it is a pity that it is generally misunderstood as a call for facing the future without regret. To me, it is really about accepting the consequences of our choices many years in the future, when it is too late to change them. The two roads in the wood were "really about the same", so the cause of any indecision is a fear of regret. It is, however, acceptable to feel regretful, because it serves as a reminder to live life to the full.
These days, football is one of the most popular sports in the world. Given that Neil Armstrong wanted to take a football to the Moon, we could even say that it is also the most popular sport out of this world! The history of the game goes back over two thousand years to Ancient China. It was then known as cuju (kick ball), a game using a ball of animal skins with hair inside. Goals were hung in the air. Football as we know it today started in Great Britain, where the game was given new rules.
Scott recorded his death: "He said, 'I am just going outside and I may be sometime'. We knew that poor Oates was walking to his death, but though we tried to stop him. we knew that it was the act of a brave man and an English gentleman. We all hope to meet the end with a similar spirit, and certainly the end is not far."
Scott and two of his team members carried on and got within eleven miles of one of their food bases. But then a terrible storm started and they could not leave their tent. Scott spent some of his last hours writing. He wrote a letter full of sadness to his wife Kathleen: "I could tell you lots and lots about this journey. What stories you would have for the boy ... But what a price to pay." Scott's diary also told the story of their end, "We are getting weaker and weaker and the end can't be far. It seems a pity, but I do not think I can write more." The news of Scott's death shocked the world. He had failed to win the race to the Pole.
THEME PARKS - FUN AND MORE THAN FUN
Which theme park would you like to visit? There are various kinds of theme parks, with a different park for almost everything: food, culture, science, cartoons, movies or history. Some parks are famous for having the biggest or longest roller coasters, others for showing the famous sights and sounds of a culture. Whichever and whatever you like, there is an incredible theme park for you!
Teresa: I'm under a lot of stress these days because my parents are always comparing me with my friends. They're never satisfied unless I do better than all my friends - in schoolwork, in hobbies, in everything!
Jack: That's terrible I can see why you're anxious. You should tell your parents that you're trying your best. There's no point in comparing you with others all the time. Everyone is unique.
Teresa: I know, but my parents don't seem to understand that. If they continue like this, I lose confidence in myself.
Jack: I think your parents are too strict with you. Don't take a passive role in the relationship. Talk to them. Let them know how you feel. Sometimes, competition can push you to do better. Right now, it's just making you anxious and having a bad influence on your performance.
Teresa: Thank you, Jack. I'll try talking to my parents.
Jack: Cheer up, Teresa. They'll understand and everything will turn out all right!
Temperatures are going to stay around 13 degree in Washington, DC. But there is yet more rain expected. That's14 days of rain in a row for the city. Some advice for everyone there---do not try to drive through floodwaters! And if you must drive in the rain, drive slowly and steadily.
In San Francisco, temperatures will be moderate around 25 degrees. However, this is combined with the dry California climate and a strong wind force of 8. This is not good news at all for the firefighters trying to control the wildfires outside the city. We are all thinking about people there who have lost their homes belongings. If you want to help, please listen for details about how to make a donation after this report.
Tornadoes are strong winds that can cause great damage. It is not easy to know where they will go, so it can be difficult to warn people what might be affected. In order to learn more about how tornadoes form and move, some brave researchers, whose job is to explore the causes of tornadoes, chase storms in order to collect more detailed information firsthand. Of course, the researchers have special equipment that can record detailed information, but they need to get close enough to use it and still keep safe from the danger.
The Amazon rainforest is home to great variety of plant life: however, its soil is surprisingly poor in nutrients. In fact, the soil in the region cannot support agriculture for more than a few years. If a scientist is shown a report listing the nutrients of that soil, he or she will probably think that only desert plants can survive in it! Then why is the soil so poor in nutrients? For one thing, the rainy season has an impact on the soil. In the rainy season, the water level can rise to around 12 meters. When the water goes away, it takes away the nutrients in the soil. For another thing, due to the Amazon's hot climate, it is difficult for the soil to build up enough nutrients.
The boat was on the inside of the huge whirlpool and we were going round in circles at great speed. I saw clearly that there were other objects in the whirlpool trees and barrels. After a while, I became curious about the whirlpool itself. I then made three important observations. The first, the larger the bodies were, the more rapidly they fell; the second, between two objects of equal extent, round objects fell down less rapidly; and the third, between two objects of the same size, objects shaped like a tube fell down more slowly. So I tied myself to a barrel to help me float. I tried to make my brother understand, but he was too frightened and stayed in the heavy boat. Without waiting, I jumped into the sea to try and escape.
There are two main ways that an interpreter can provide spoken translation. Firstly, require the speaker to stop every few sentences, so interpreter can translate those sentences for the audience. Secondly, listen and translate at the same time. The second way is more difficult, but the place where the interpreter is located is not so important.
Symphony No 9 was Beethoven's last major piece of music in a vast body of works written throughout his remarkable life. As a gifted child, Beethoven was pushed by his father to study music day and night. Not long after, he began to be appreciated for his piano performances. By the time he was a teenager, he had already enjoyed a reputation as a wonderful young musician. Many important figures in the music world, including the brilliant musician Mozart, started making predictions about Beethoven's extraordinary future. However, life took a sharp turn. In his late twenties, Beethoven suffered one of the worst possible twists for a musician: he started to lose his hearing.
Even though Tu Youyou is not interested in fame, she has become a scientist whose work is internationally renowned. In 2019, she was selected by the BBC as one of the most influential figures of science in the 20th Century along with Albert Einstein and Alan Mathison Turing. Tu Youyou was noted for her bravery in being a scientist during a difficult time for science in China, her ability to use old wisdom and new methods to achieve her goals and the fact that her work bridged the Eastern and Western worlds, saving millions of lives. Today Tu Youyou continues to conduct research despite her age. According to Tu Youyou, "From our research experience in discovering artemisinin, we learnt the wisdom behind both Chinese and Western medicine. There is great potential for future advances if these two kinds of wisdom can be fully integrated," she said.

One may think that it is the book writer who is in the best position to do film adaptations. In fact, sometimes authors are very involved in the process and may even be the screenwriter. This can actually be a disadvantage because they may be too close to the material and find it difficult to adapt to a new form. At other times they are not and there are instances where writers have been very unsatisfied with the film versions of their work; Stephen King is an example of this. Even more extreme was novelist, J. D. Salinger, who made sure no film versions of his popular novel *A Catcher in the Rye* ever be made. In this situation, it is clear that viewers will not be disappointed! For me, anyway, it is always a bad idea to watch a film of a book you love.
It is 10 in the morning, and I am travelling by raft down the Li River. The sun is already burning hot even though it has not yet reached full strength, but a calm breeze cools my skin. So far the day is wonderful, but the purpose of my trip is not just to have fun: I am following in the footsteps of Xu Xiake (1587-1641), the famous Chinese travel writer and geographer. Though Xu was from Jiangsu, he spent more than 30 years travelling throughout the country, and greatly admired my destination today - Ox Gorge.
The return journey was one of the worst in the history of exploration. The men were soon very tired and were running out of food. The weather conditions were terrible. Scott started to realise their hopeless situation: "We are very cheerful, but what each man feels in his heart I can only guess. Putting on our shoes in the morning is getting slower and slower."
However, on their way back they found time to look for rocks. They carried twenty kilos of rocks all the way with them. Later, these rocks proved that at one time in the distant past, the continent of Antarctic was covered by plants.
Then disaster came. Edgar Evans had a terrible disease and died after a bad fall. The next to go was Captain Oates, who was having great difficulty walking. Scott recorded his death: "He said...
Anne's technique to teach Helen language was simple and straightforward. Anne spelt words by writing on Helen's hand so that Helen could get a mental picture of the words. She started with the word "doll". She would let Helen play with the doll, and then spell the letters "D-O-L-L" on her hand. When they initially did this, Helen thought it was a game. She wrote about her excitement later in her book: The Story of My Life.
Even as a young boy, da Vinci showed promise as an artist. When he was fourteen years old, he was sent to learn art in Florence, Italy. He trained for seven years, and then struck out on his own, working for wealthy men throughout Italy, and later for the king of France. Even though Leonardo began his career as a painter, he most often worked as an engineer. One reason was that he painted very slowly, and sometimes did not even finish his work. Another reason was that Italy was at war, and people needed engineers to help build city defences more than they needed artists. However, even though da Vinci worked as an engineer, he still found time to paint, creating some of his greatest artworks during this period.

Then autumn leaves turn brown,
Fall into piles upon the ground.
Farmers work to harvest crops,
As the days are shorter and the temperature drops.
Soon the snowy season will begin,
And it will be a new year once again.
Winter days are full of snow,
When trees and flowers forget to grow.
And the birds fly far away,
To find a warm and sunny day.

This afternoon, we went to Ocean Park. It isn't far from the restaurant where we ate lunch. Unfortunately, we got lost. Our taxi driver didn't understand what we were saying. Luckily, a man who understood Putonghua told the driver where we were going. Ocean Park has a lot of marine, or ocean animals as well as some very exciting rides. Dad and I went on a ride that goes round and round very fast. Afterwards, Mum waned to go to a market but was too tired. Dad and I went back to the hotel and Mum went to the market by herself.

Daniel: I agree.
My name is David. In February, my class sold cookies at school. My cookies looked like hearts. My aunt helped me make them.
My class made posters about the cookie sale. The posters told everyone where and when they could buy our cookies. At lunchtime, we put up tables in the hall and sold the cookies. We also sold them after school.
The cookies cost 25 cents each. Can you guess how much money we made? We made $320!
How did we deal with the money? We helped an elementary school in our city. The school needed new storybooks for its young students.

Norman Bethune is well known for helping the Chinese people in the Anti-Japanese War. In 1938, he made a decision to go to northern China because he knew many people were dying in the war. Bethune organized hospitals, taught doctors and nurses, and showed people how to give first aid.
In China, Norman Bethune is a hero. People remember how hard he worked day after day in the worst possible conditions to help others. He once operated for sixty-nine hours straight without stopping.
Yuan Longping is the "father" of Hybrid rice. He was born in 1930. He graduated from the Southwest Agricultural University in 1953. He came up with an idea for Hybrid rice in the 1960s. Since then, he has devoted himself to research and to the development of new varieties.
In 1973, together with other people, he succeeded in the development of Hybrid rice. This made China a worldwide leader in rice production. In 1980, the technology for hybrid rice was introduced to the United States. Now his "super rice" has been introduced to more than 20 other countries. Because of Professor Yuan's hard work, China now produces enough rice to feed her people every year.
In his spare time, Yuan Longping loves playing the violin and listening to music. Every night, he reads for half an hour before he goes to sleep. It is said that Professor Yuan is one of the richest person in China. But he cares about nothing but his research.
Daniel: What would it be like to live on Mars?
Amy: There's less gravity on Mars. We'd probably need to wear special boots.
Daniel: Yes. And we might need sleeping bags too.
Amy: I agree, Also, there's no fruit or vegetables, so we would have to eat dried food.
Daniel: Well ... that sounds quite boring! But there would be no pollution on Mars.
Amy: I hope so.
My name is Leo. I'm from Australia, and I've been teaching in China for two years teach in Harbin, the capital of Heilongjiang Province. This is an interesting city with a very colorful history. There is some European influence in the city, and some of the old buildings in Harbin are in Russian style.

Journalist: Hi, Kangkang. Could I ask you a few questions?
Kangkang: Certainly.
Journalist: We all know that you're working for an organization that protects the environment. Can you tell us what you are doing there?
Kangkang: Well. my main job is to help spread the message about protecting the environment. For example, it's important to reduce, reuse and recycle the litter.
Journalist: So what can we do at home to protect the environment?
Kangkang: We should reduce the waste we produce. For example, we should use both sides of paper and reuse plastic bags
Journalist: What can students do at school?
Kangkang: Recycling can protect the environment, and it can save money, too. So we encourage students to collect waste paper and soft drink cans. Then we sort them so that they can be recycled.
Journalist: Wonderful ideas! Thank you!
Kangkang: It's a pleasure.
You are never too young to start doing things that you don't know how to do before. For example, Tiger Woods started golfing when he was only ten months old. Mozart started writing music when he was only four years old. And Ronald, the great Brazilian soccer player, played for his national team when he was seventeen.

A Chinese knot is usually made of a thin rope. It can be in the shape of an animal, a flower or a Chinese character with a special meaning. Red ropes are usually used because red is a lucky colour for Chinese people.
Many Chinese knots have special meanings. People think that these knots can bring them happiness or good luck, so they carry the knots with them or put them up at home.
Hello. We are students from Thailand, and we want to save the elephants. The elephant is one of Thailand's symbols. Our first flag had a white elephant on it. This is a symbol of good luck. Elephants are smart animals. They can play soccer or music. They can also draw very well. People say that "an elephant never forgets". Elephants can walk for a long time and never get lost. They can also remember place with food and water. This helps them to live. But elephants are in great danger. People cut down many trees so elephants are losing their homes. People also kill elephants for their ivory. Today there are only about 300 elephants (over 100,000 before). We must save the trees and not buy things made of ivory. Remember that March 13th is Thai Elephant Day.

Grandma took care of my family. She was really kind and patient. She died wo years ago and I miss her very much.

This is a painting by the Spanish artist. Pablo Picasso, considered to be the greatest western artist of the twentieth century. Picasso and another painter, Georges Braque, started Cubism, one of the most important of all modern art movements.
Cubist artists painted objects and people, with different aspects of the object or person showing at the same time. The painting by contemporary American artist Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997) is a world-famous example of pop art. Pop art (from the word "popular") was an important modern art movement that aimed to show ordinary twentieth-century city life. For example, it shows things such as soup cans and advertisements.
There Daisy saw an antelope looking sad. It said, “We're being killed for the wool beneath our stomachs. Our fur is being used to make sweaters for people like you. As a result, we are now an endangered species.” At that Daisy cried, “I'm sorry I didn't know that. I wonder what is being done to help you.
It is 5: 45 am and the sun is just rising. Following Jane's way of studying chimps our group are all going to visit them in the forest. Everybody sits and waits in the shade of the trees while the family begins to wake up and move off. Then we follow as they wander into the forest. Jane warns us that our group is going to be very tired and dirty by the afternoon and she is right.
Dr. Yuan doesn't care about being famous. He feels it gives him less freedom to do his research. He would much rather keep time for his hobbies. He enjoys listening to violin music, swimming and reading. Spending money on himself or leading a comfortable life also means very little to him. Indeed, he believes that a person with too much money has more rather than fewer troubles.
Frederick William I, the King of Prussia, could never have imagined that his greatest gift to the Russian people would have such an amazing history. This gift was the Amber Room, which was given this name because several tons of amber was used to make it. The amber which was selected had a beautiful yellow-brown color like honey. The design of the room was in the fancy style popular in those days. It was also a treasure decorated with gold and jewels, which took the country best artists about ten years to make.
There have been many popular bands in the world, of which the most famous was the Beatles. The four young men who made up the band only performed and recorded from 1963 to 1970. During those years they gave many concerts, at which they played all their latest hits. They made many records, of which they will always be remembered.
Many musicians may start as a group of high-school students, for whom practising their music in someone’s house is the first step to fame. Sometimes they may play to passers-by in the street or subway so that they can earn some extra money for themselves or to pay for their instruments. Later they may give performances in pubs or clubs, for which they are paid in cash.
At the time they were created, the Impressionist paintings were controversial, but today they are accepted as the beginning of what we call "modem art". This is because the Impressionists encouraged artists to look at their environment in new ways. There are scores of modern art styles, but without the Impressionists, many of these painting styles might not exist.

As you wander around the fantasy amusement park, you may see Snow White or Mickey Mouse in a parade or on the street. Of course, Disneyland also has many exciting rides, from giant swinging ships to terrifying free-fall drops. With all these attractions, no wonder tourism is increasing wherever there is a Disneyland. If you want to have fun and more than fun, come to Disneyland!
As Victor Hugo once said, “Laughter is the sun that drives winter from the human face”, and up to now nobody has been able to do this better than Charlie Chaplin. He brightened the lives of Americans and British through two world wars and the hard years in between. He made people laugh at a time when they felt depressed, so they could feel more content with their lives.
What are some of the problems caused by chemical fertilizers? First, they damage the land by killing the helpful bacteria and pests as well as the harmful ones. Chemicals also stay in the ground and underground water for a long time. This affect crops, and therefore, animals and humans, since chemicals get inside the crops and cannot just be washed off. These chemicals in the food supply build up in people's bodies over time. Many of these chemicals can lead to cancer or other illnesses. In addition, fruit, vegetables and other food grown with chemical fertilizers usually grow too fast to be full of much nutrition. They may look beautiful, but inside there is usually more water than vitamins and minerals.
I was appointed as a volcanologist working for the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory twenty years ago. I help other scientists to predict where lava from the volcano will flow next and how fast. Our work has saved many lives because people in the path of the lava can be warned to leave their houses. Unfortunately, we can't move their homes out of the way, and many houses have been covered with lava or burned to the ground.
Feng loves his hometown. He believes that old things must be given a place next to new things, or people will soon forget their great past. He does not make speeches to get others to help him in his projects. Instead, he goes out and does what he can himself, if others follow him so much the better. One of his biggest projects was to protect the oldest street in Tianjin. Along that street some shops had done business for seven hundred years. Although the city government rebuilt this street, they did save its oldest building. Another project was more successful; he persuaded the city government to buy some land in the center of the city so it could not be sold for business. This area is very important for the history of Tianjin was here that the city was first built during the Song Dynasty.
There is no doubt that the earth is becoming warmer and that it is human activity that has caused this global warming rather than a random but natural phenomenon. All scientists subscribe to the view that the increase in the earth's temperature is due to the burning of fossil and fuels like coal, natural gas and oil to produce energy. Some byproducts of this process are called "greenhouse" gases, the most important one of which is carbon dioxide.
Pausanias, who was a Greek writer about 2,000 years ago, has come on a magical journey on March 18th 2007 to find out about the present-day Olympic Games. He is now interviewing Li Yan, a volunteer for the 2008 Olympic Games.
P: My name is Pausanias. I lived in what you call “Ancient Greece” and I used to write about the Olympic Games a long time ago. I’ve come to your time to find out about the present-day Olympic Games because I know that in 2004 they were held in my homeland. May I ask you some questions about the modern Olympics?
L: Good heavens! Have you really come from so long ago? But of course, you can ask any questions you like. What would you like to know?
P: How often do you hold your Games?
L: Every four years. There are two main sets of Games-the Winter and Summer Olympics, and both are held every four years on a regular basis. The Winter Olympics are usually held two years before the Summer Games. Only athletes who have reached the agreed standard for their event will be admitted as competitors. They may come from anywhere in the world.
I first became interested in football when I was nine. Now play in my school team and join my friends for a game every week on a regular basis. It’s fun. My favourite football player is David Beckham, although I also like Ronaldo. They are both excellent and have great skills too. Apart from playing at school I go to sports school every weekend. I learn many skills there, such as passing the ball and scoring. I especially like playing on the wing like Beckham but being a striker is good as well.
One area of concern for many countries is the advertising of unhealthy food during children's television programmes. In Australia, which has the highest number of food advertisements in children's television in the world, there are an average of 12 food ads per hour. However, in Sweden and Austria where there are strict laws about advertising during children's programmes, there is only one food ad per hour.
I am very worried about McDonald's building a restaurant in our hometown. We are a small community and we enjoy our local dishes. I am not sure if McDonald's food is as healthy as they say in their advertisements. When scientists look at it carefully, they find high levels of fat, sugar and salt. This is very worrying. Too many young people are getting fat through eating too much fatty food. McDonald's is not giving young people a good idea of what a healthy diet should be. Local Chinese food, on the other hand, is full of fresh vegetables and fresh meat and fish. The food at a McDonald's restaurant is always the same, so I wonder if it is made or brought in from elsewhere. Although it is freshly cooked, it must be less healthy than our own locally grown and cooked Chinese food.
There was an old man of Beijing.
Who would eat almost anything.
He ate and ate
From anyone's plate.
But he stayed just as thin as a string.
There was an old man with a beard.
Who said "it is just as I feared".
"Four insects and then
Two birds and a hen
Have all made a home in my beard"
I: Good evening, and welcome to the show. With me in the studio is Professor Marion Smith, who is an expert on the connection between crime and drug addiction. Good evening, Professor Smith.
P: Good evening.
I: First of all, how many people use illegal drugs in Britain?
P: Possibly four million people.
I: Really? Four million?
P: Yes.
I: How many of them break the law in order to pay for their drugs?
P: We estimate that a hundred thousand people steal in order to pay for their drug addiction.
I: A hundred thousand?! That's incredible! And what kind of crimes do they commit?
P: Mainly shoplifting-in other words, stealing from shops-and burglary, stealing from houses.
An orchestra is a group of musicians that mostly play classical music. A small orchestra is called a chamber orchestra. A large or full-size orchestra can be called a symphony orchestra or a philharmonic orchestra. These are not two different types of orchestras. Sometimes, though, they are used to tell the difference between two orchestras in the same city such as London Symphony Orchestra and the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
Minibuses
Minibuses with seats for 12 passengers offer an alternative to expensive taxis and crowded public transport in some areas. They run regular services and follow the same routes as large public buses. And in a minibus you always get a seat even in rush hours.
Pedicabs
Tourists like these human-pedaled tricycle taxis, but they can be expensive. You should talk to the driver, and make sure you know the price before you begin the journey, for example, if it is per person, single or return. Tricycles are worth using if you want to explore the narrow alleys (hutong) of old Beijing.
Ecotourists are people who visit an area and do not do harm or damage the ecosystem. They are interested in environmental protection. If you are this kind of tourist, you will love Ecoville. We use natural, safe energy from the sun, solar energy, instead of digging up Earth to find fossil fuels. Nothing in our hotel causes pollution. We even use eco-friendly washing powder to wash your sheets. Don't have your next holiday in a city full of factories that create harmful waste. Come to Ecoville where you and earth will be safe together.

Not long after Freddy and the band became famous, they visited Britain on a brief tour. Fans showed their devotion by waiting for hours to get tickets for their concerts. Freddy was now quite confident when he went into a concert hall. He enjoyed singing and all the congratulations afterwards! His most exciting invitation was to perform on a TV program called "Top of the Pops." He had to go to London, wear an expensive suit and give a performance to a TV camera. It felt very strange. But as soon as the program was over, the telephones which were in the same room started ringing. Everybody was asking when they could see Freddy and his band again. They were truly stars.
Autumn passes too quickly. At first, the leaves on the trees turn yellow and red. One day, they have turn brown and fall to the ground. Night falls a bit earlier each day! Then, one morning, everything is covered by a soft blanket of snow. When people go outside, their hands feel cold and numb. Winter has come!
These changes only became possible as memory improved. First, it was stored in tubes, then on transistors and later on very small chips. As a result, I totally changed my shape. As I have grown older, I have also grown smaller. Over time my memory has developed so much that, like an elephant, I never forget anything I have been told! And my memory became so large that even I couldn't believe it. But I was always so lonely standing there by myself, until in the early 1960s they gave me a family connected by a network. I was able to share my knowledge with others through the World Wide Web.
Dear WWF,
I live on an island near Africa. This is the only home of the red Colobus monkey but there are very few left. This is my plan to save the monkeys. First, I suggest making a special park for them. We should inspect them every month and see how fit they are and whether they need more food or medicine.
Second…
Please help the poor monkeys and l am sure that they will survive with your help.
Yours sincerely,
William Long
Today, many developing countries are heavily in debt. ln fact, most of them have debts that can never be repaid. During the 1970s and 1980s many developing countries borrowed money from developed countries. However, very high interest rates have created a situation where countries in the developing world now spend \$13 on debt repayment for every \$1 that they received. Therefore, these countries will never be able to repay the money. As a result, these countries are always struggling to catch upon their repayments.
Metropolitan Museum of Art (5th Avenue and 82nd Street)
The reputation of this museum lies in the variety of its art collection. This covers more than 5,000 years of civilization from many parts of the world, including America, Europe, China, Egypt, other African countries and South America. The museum displays more than just the visual delights of art. It introduces you to ancient ways of living. You can visit an Egyptian temple, a fragrant Ming Garden, a typical room in an 18th century French house and many other special exhibitions.
Since the 1970s many new applications have been found for me. I have become very important in communication, finance and trade. I have also been put into robots and used to make mobile phones as well as help with medical operations. I have even been put into space rockets and sent to explore the Moon and Mars. Anyhow, my goal is to provide humans with a life of high quality.
An advertisement uses words and pictures to persuade people to buy a product or service, or to believe in an idea. Newspapers, magazines, the internet, radio and television are the most common places to find them. There are two main types of advertisements: commercial advertisements and public service advertisements (PSAs). A commercial advertisement is one which someone has paid for to advertise a product or service. PSAs are often run for free, and are intended to educate people about health, safety, or any other problem which affects public issue.
The first person to arrive was Tony Garcia from Colombia, closely followed by Julia Smith from Britain. After I met them and then introduced them to each other. I was very surprised. Tony approached Julia, touched her shoulder and kissed her on the cheek! She stepped back appearing surprised and put up her hands, as if in defence. l guessed that there was probably a major misunderstanding. Then Akira Nagata from Japan came in smiling, together with George Cook from Canada. As they were introduced, George reached his hand out to the Japanese student. Just at that moment, however, Akira bowed so his nose touched George's moving hand. They both apologized – another cultural mistake!
The possibility that pleasant smells might reduce pain has recently been suggested by new research. In a scientific study, doctors asked 20 men and 20 women to keep their hands in very hot water for as long as possible while breathing in different smells.
Since it is believed that strong smells can affect the senses, volunteers were required not to eat or drink for eight hours before the experiment. During the experiment, volunteers were asked to sniff various pleasant smells and unpleasant smells. At the same time, the volunteers kept their hands in hot water until they could no longer tolerate the pain.
Daisy had always longed to help endangered species of wildlife. One day she woke up and found a flying carpet by her bed. "Where do you want to go?" it asked. Daisy responded immediately. "I'd like to see some endangered wildlife, " she said. "Please take me to a distant land where l can find the animal that gave fur to make this sweater." At once the carpet flew away and took her to Tibet. There Daisy saw an antelope looking sad.
What is it like in winter?

Lin Fei's home is about 10 kilometers from school. He gets up at six o’clock every day, showers, and has a quick breakfast. Then he leaves for school at around six-thirty. First, he rides his bicycle to the bus station. That takes about ten minutes. Then the early bus takes him to school. The bus ride usually takes about 25 minutes.

I like to have friends who are like me. I am quieter than most of the kids in my class, and my best friend Yuan Li is quiet, too. There are some differences, though I'm smarter than Yuan Li. She is more athletic.
Traditional Chinese doctors believe we need a balance of yin and yang to be healthy. For example, are you quiet and often tired? You may have too much yin. You should eat hot yang foods like beef, Dangshen and Huangqi herbs. But people who are too stressed out and angry may have too much yang. Chinese doctors believe that they should eat more yin foods like tofu.

Fitzroy is a lovely suburb now. It’s close to the Yarra River that goes through Melbourne and there are lots of parks here. The center of Melbourne is very easy to get to because it’s only three kilometers from Fitzroy. If you want to go to Melbourne, you can travel by train. There are lots of things to do in Fitzroy. There is a swimming pool near and there are tennis courts. There are bike paths and places to walk and picnic. You can also do lots of water sports on the Yarra River. If you sit by the river in the evening, you will see lots of people in sailboats there.
Teahouse is one of Laoshe's most famous plays. He wrote it in 1957.The play has three acts and show the lives of common people in China from the end of the nineteenth century to the middle of twentieth century.
He wrote many plays, novels and short stories about people's lives, and he was named "the People's Artist".
Well, I hope you're enjoying my school in New York, I like your school in Beijing, but I am not feeling very well at the moment, I am tired and have a lot of headaches. And I am stressed out because my Putonghua isn’t improving. I study late every night, sometimes until 2 am, but I don't think I am improving. I really need some conversation practice! I think I have a cold, too.

You are never too young to start doing things. For example, Tiger Woods started golfing when he was only ten months old. Mozart started writing music when he was four years old. And Ronaldo, the great Brazilian soccer player, played for his notional team when he was seventeen.
Lisa: Tom won first prize in the speech competition.
Bob: How wonderful! He must be very happy.

Dear Tom,
How was your day off? Did you have fun camping? I didn't have a very fun day. I visited my cousins. It rained all day. In the morning, I stayed in the house and watched DVDs, played computer games, and read. In the afternoon, Uncle Martin put some of his old things out in the yard and had a yard sale! However, no one came to the sale because the weather was so bad. Luckily, we brought our umbrellas and raincoats, so we didn't get wet.
See you soon!
Nick
Dear Editor,
I visited our zoo yesterday and I was very surprised to find hardly anyone there. Zoos are very important places. They are like living textbooks for young people. They provide homes for many endangered animals and help to educate the public about caring for them. If we don’t support our zoos, they won’t have enough money to take care of so many fine animals. I urge all of your readers to visit our wonderful zoo soon.
Sincerely,
Animal Friend
In Switzerland, it's very important to be on time, we are the capital of clocks and watches, after all, if someone invites you to meet him or her at noon, then you are expected to be there at noon. If you are even 15 minutes late, your friend may get mad. So I make an effort to be on time when I meet my friends, I always leave the house early to avoid heavy traffic because I think it's impolite to keep other waiting. Also, we never visit a friend's house without calling first. We almost always make plans to see friends. We usually plan to do some interesting things, or go somewhere together.
People also think designer clothes are better made. For example, many people think the right running shoes will make you run faster or play better. Of course, this is not always true. It's the training not the shoes that improves your speed or your score. Most people dress in a way that their personality can be shown off. But if some of us buy expensive clothes just to look cool, what does that say about us? Maybe it's just clever advertising.
Sandy: It’s time for lunch. Mum, can we stop cleaning the house and make some food? I am hungry.
Mum: Ok, Let’s do some Sandwiches.
Sandy: Are they quick and easy to make?
Mum: Sure, look at me. First, pick a piece of bread. Then take some tomato sauce on it.
Sandy: Next, we can put some ham and vegetables on it.
Mum: That’s correct.
Sandy: Is that all right?
Mum: Well, just put another piece of bread on the top of it. Finished!
Millie: Hi Daniel, there is an English corner at Sunny Garden this Saturday afternoon. Would you like to come?
Daniel: Yes, I'd love to. How do I get there?
Millie: you can walk there from your building. Go out and turn left. Walk straight on, and you will see the traffic lights.
Daniel: which way should I go at the traffic lights?
Millie: Just across the road walk. Past the supermarket and turn left at the first crossing. Then you will see Sunny Garden at the corner of the street
Daniel: Thanks Miller, see you there.
Amy: Do you know about any amazing things, Simon?
Simon: Yes, I heard of a young man. He traveled around over 80 countries by bicycle.
Amy: That's cool. What amazing things do you know, Millie?
Millie: I read about a man the day the other day. He can write with one hand and draw with the other at the same time.
Simon: That's really amazing! What about you, Peter? Do you know any amazing things?
Peter:I learnt about an artist. He can draw 3D pictures with chalk.
Simon: That's really great!
My parents and I arrived in Hong Kong on the first day of the Winter holiday. We have been here for three days. I borrowed a book about Hong Kong a week ago. It's very useful I have kept it with me for a few days. It helps me learned more about Hong Kong. Now its noon and we are in Ocean Park. The first dolphin show began at 11:30 am. It has been on for about half an hour. The show is really exciting.
I'm talking to you from the Hilltop School Skating Marathon. Here students are skating to raise money for charity. For every hour they skate, each student raises ten Yuan for clarity. The skating marathon has been going for five hours now, and several skaters are still skating. Alison was the first one to start, and has been skating for the whole five hours. Next is Sam, and he has been skating for four hours. Lining has been skating for four hours two and Lichen just started an hour ago.
Millie: How did you go to school when you were a student, Dad?
Dad: I used to go to school by bike.
Millie: Why didn’t you take a bus?
Dad: Well, there were always too many people on the bus, and it took a long time to wait for next one.
Millie: Really? I go to school by bus. Now, it’s easy and fast.
I am writing to say that I am against building a new zoo in our town. Zoos are terrible places for animals to live. I've visited a lot of zoos in my life, and I have never seen one I liked or one that was suitable for animals to live in. Just last week, I visited a zoo and couldn't believe what I saw. The animals are kept in tiny cages and can hardly move at all. And they are only given food once a day. Is this a good way for animals to live? I don't think so.
In English, just like in Chinese, we change the way we speak when talking with different people. The expressions you use might depend on whom you are speaking to or how well you know them. If you say to your teacher, "where is my book", this will sound rude. But if you say "excuse me, Mr. West, do you know where my book is?" your question will sound more polite.
Dear Dr. Know,
Now, I'm not happy, I have too many rules in my family. I have to get up at six o'clock every morning. I can't meet my friends after school because I have to do my homework. I can't watch TV on school nights. And I have to be in bed by ten o'clock. On weekends, I have to clean my room and wash my clothes. Then I have to help my mom make dinner. Later I have to go to the children's palace to learn to play the piano. I don't have any fun. What can I do?

When we first visit another country, we may have a strange feeling. We call this feeling "culture shock". People have culture shock for different reasons. They may not know the language and local culture of the country. They may also miss their families and friends. To deal with culture shock, you can: Try and make new friends, try new things, like the local food, keep a daily, write about all your new experiences. Call your parents and friends and tell them about these new things.
How do writers decide which words belong in a dictionary? This is not an easy question to answer because it is not easy to write a dictionary. Languages are not dead they are alive so dictionaries have to change as languages changes. So, how do dictionary writers or editors decided which word to include in a dictionary? The number of times people use a word helps the writer or editors to decide if that word belongs in a dictionary.
One day, something happened to me that I have never forgotten. It was the winter of 1917. It was very cold and I got up early to go to work, as always, it was difficult to find a rickshaw so early. After a while, one came along. We were on our way when someone ran in front of the rickshaw and fell down. It was an old woman wearing old clothes, the rickshaw man was quick and stopped the rickshaw in time; the woman did not seem to be hurt at all.
How do kids spend the Weekend? Yesterday, we asked ten students at No. 3 Middle School what they did last weekend. For most kids, the weekend was fun. On Saturday morning, ten kids did their homework or studied. On Saturday afternoon, five kids went to the library. Two kids also played computer games. On Saturday evening, seven kids watched a movie or stayed at home and watched TV. On Sunday, two kids visited friends, nine kids cleaned their rooms, and five played sports.
Female: I had a fantastic holiday in Egypt.
Male: Yes? (showing interest)
Female: The hotel was really fantastic. There were two swimming pools, a huge lake with windsurfing, tennis courts...
Male: Mm, were there? (interested)
Female: I went on a boat with a glass bottom looking at the amazing multi-coloured fish.
Male: Mm, did you really? (interested)
Female: Here is a photo of my family outside the hotel.
Male: Mm. (not interested)

Xiao Li: It's great to see you again, John.
John Martin: It's great to see you! It's been six years since we last saw each other, you know. And this is the first time I've visited your hometown.
Xiao Li: Yes, I'm so glad you could come.
John Martin: You know, I've seen quite a lot of China and I've visited some beautiful cities, but this is one of the most attractive places I've been to. It's so lively and everyone seems so friendly.
Xiao Li: Yes, it's one of the most interesting cities on the coast, everyone says so. I feel very fortunate living here. And I love living by the seaside.
However, learning English as a foreign language is very difficult in the absence of a native language environment. Some respected theories on language acquisition believe that to attain a high level of fluency and accuracy in a foreign language, you need to be surrounded by it. But sadly the chances that we will all have the opportunity to live in an English-speaking country are small. Therefore, most of us have to rely on what we can learn at school as part of the school curriculum.
Around the end of the first century AD, a Roman writer called Pliny wrote about a terrible volcanic eruption that he had witnessed as a young man. The eruption had occurred on August 24th, 79 AD. The earth began to tremble and a volcano named Vesuvius, near Pompeii, Italy, erupted. Pliny described a cloud coming down the mountain, blocking out the sun and burying everything in its path, including whole villages and towns. Yet, over the centuries, there was a greater loss. The people, towns and villages that had disappeared under the ashes were entirely forgotten by the world.
When Polly left home that morning, the city was already covered in a grey mist. At lunch, the radio forecasted that the mist would become a thick fog in the afternoon. At four o'clock, Polly left work and stepped out into the fog. She wondered if the buses would still be running.
People have been enjoying the benefits of cycling in Amsterdam for years. It is a good city for cycling because it is flat and therefore is convenient for bikes. There are also plenty of places for bicycle parking and most streets in the city center have a bicycle path. Today some people call Amsterdam the "City of Bicycles" because of the convenience for bicycles there.
With December our excitement grew each day — as we opened the new year calendar, Christmas cards arrived in the post, Christmas lights appeared in the streets, and we attended the town carol service. And of course, there was snow everywhere. Enough snow to make snowmen, and to have exciting snowball fights in the school playground.
Leonardo da Vinci was born in a small town in Tuscany, in the centre of Italy. At school his teachers were astonished by his talent. But Leonardo thought his was disappointed because he learnt enough. So instead of relaxing evenings spent with friends, Leonardo preferred studying Latin by himself. He was good at everything: he was a strong athlete and he had a fine singing voice. But he was especially interested in painting. When he was 14, he went to work for well-known artist Verrocchio and soon became an artist than his master. His first known drawing, showing a valley in Tuscany, is astonishing. It shows a new approach to perspective. The scene looks real.
Xu Beihong (1893-1953) was one of China's best-known twentieth-century artist. Like Qi Baishi, Xu painted in the traditional Chinese style. Both painters have a beautiful brush line. Beibong believed that artists should show reality, but not just imitate it. Instead, a picture should try to show the life" of its subject. He is most famous for his lively paintings of horses .
Montserrat is a beautiful small island in the Caribbean, only 16 kilometers long and 10 kilometers wide. This tiny island has three volcanoes.
One of the volcanoes erupted on the 184 July 1995. There had been several problems with the volcano over the previous hundred years, but this was the first dangerous eruption.
People were told to leave the island as ash and stream began to come out of the volcano, and were warned that the lave from the volcano could bury several villages. When the lave reached the sea, there was the possibility of a huge tidal wave which could flood half the island.
Sandstorms are strong, dry winds that carry sand. They are often so thick that you cannot see the sun, and the wind is sometimes strong enough to move sand dunes. The four main places in the world where there are sandstorms are Central Asia, North America, Central Africa and Australia. Ren Jianbo, from Inner Mongolia described a terrible sandstorm he experienced as a child in the desert. "To have been caught in a sandstorm was a terrible experience," he said. "There was nothing to be done. It was the most frightening and the most dangerous situation I've ever been in. You just had to hope you'd survive. I thought I was going to disappear under the sand."
What will the future look like? No one knows for sure, and making predictions is a risky business. But one thing is certain—— They are going to get bigger before they get smaller. In the future, care for the environment will become very important as earth's natural resources run out. We will use lots of recycled materials, such as plastic, aluminum, steel, glass, wood and paper, and we will waste fewer natural resources.
We will use also have to rely more on alternative energy, such as solar and wind power. All this seems certain, but there are plenty of things about city life in the future which are not certain. To find out what young think about the future of urban life, a teacher in Texas in the United States asked his students to think how they would run a city of 50, 000 people in the year 2025.
A: Hey, that's a good portrait. It's so realistic. You've really got the expression right-the look in the eyes.
B: Yes, I'm pleased with it. What do you make of the mouth? Do you think I need to do more work on it?
A: No. Don't change a thing. It is brilliant. And the light coming in through the window is really good. You're a good painter, you know.
B: Thanks for the compliment!
Some experts are pessimistic about the future. One worry is crime in cyberspace. Even now, young hackers can get into the computers of banks and governments. In the future terrorists may “attack" the world's computers, cause chaos, and make planes and trains crash. However, many people are optimistic about the future of the internet. Already, users can buy books, find out about holiday offers book tickets, and get all sorts of information from the internet.
My mother has always made sure we eat very healthily, and fresh fruit and vegetables are a very important part of our diet. We live near the sea and we have fish about four times a week. We don't eat much fat or sugar. A lot of my school friends eat sweets every day but I'm lucky because I don't have a sweet-tooth. I'd rather eat a nice piece of fruit. And I'm not too heavy, so I never have to diet, or anything like that.
Doctor: Hello, Mr. Chen, how can I help you?
Mr. Chen: I'm not feeling at all well, doctor. In fact, I feel awful. I've got a temperature of 38 °C and my chest hurts when I breathe.
Doctor: How long have you had the temperature? Two or three days?
Mr. Chen: About four days, actually.
Doctor: Four days. Do you have any other symptoms?
Mr. Chen: Yes, I've got a sore throat and a cough.
Doctor: Can you lie down, please, and I'll examine you? ... Can you take a deep breath? ... And another one ...
Doctor: Well, I'm afraid you've probably got pneumonia. We'll need to do an X-ray to be certain, and we may need to take you into hospital.
Mr. Chen: Oh dear!
Chinese Taikonaut Back on Earth!
China's first taikonaut Lieutenant Colonel Yang Liwei landed safely this morning in the Shenzhou V capsule in Inner Mongolia, 300 kilometers northwest of Beijing. Yang was in space for twenty-one and a half hours and made 14 orbits of the earth.
“It is a great moment in the history of China - and also the greatest day of my life," said Yang. When he was orbiting in the capsule, he took photographs of planet earth. “Our planet is so beautiful," he said.
The Beijing Space Control Centre said the flight was a “complete success”. When Yang landed, Premier Wen Jiabao telephoned the Control Centre to offer his congratulations.
When Yang took off from Jiuquan in northwest China at 9 am yesterday, China became the third nation to send a man into space. Yang is the 438th person to travel in space, including astronauts from32 countries. In total, these astronauts have spent more than 26,000 days in space.
A: I'm really fond of painting. But learning to paint well takes a long time. How about you are you interested in it?
B: Yes, but I'm not half as good as you. Painting is difficult for me. I couldn't possibly paint a portrait as good as this. I think drawing's a lot easier. I do quite a lot of drawing.
A: So do I. I always learn a lot when I draw. It teaches you to observe things very carefully.
B: Do you go to art galleries?
A: No, I don't. But I should though.
B: I really do love art well, how about going to an art gallery next weekend? I'm sure we can find something interesting.
They say that first impressions are very important. My first impression of Mrs. Li was that she was nervous and shy. But now, after two weeks, the class really likes working with her. She is kind and patient, and she explains English grammar so clearly that even I can understand it! She avoids making you feel stupid. I've always hated making mistakes or pronouncing a word is correctly when I speak English, but Mrs. Li just smiles, so that you don't feel completely stupid! I think maybe she goes a bit too slowly for the faster students, but-for me it's wonderful!
My home province is an immense region in the southwest of the country, with a very varied landscape. Much of it is hilly, but in the remote areas in the west it reaches the steep slopes of the Himalayas. There are mountains to the north and a high plateau to the south. In the east there are fertile plains and lots of towns.
I think, my hometown is a beautiful province. People call it "The heavenly Kingdom" but the name real means "four rivers". The most famous river is the Yangtze, which passes all the way through the province on its long journey to the coast.
The Mona Lisa is the subject of many stories, but there is one anecdote which remains a puzzle. Is the painting in the Louvre the authentic work by Leonardo da Vinci... or just a copy?
The story began one day in 1911 when someone noticed the Mona Lisa was missing. A spokesman said, “The burglar left the antique frame and the glass behind. He must have gone through the basement to the main courtyard. A passerby saw a man with a moustache, carrying a parcel under his arm, dash over the street crossing, along to the crossroads. He then fled down a sideroad. We're appealing to anyone who saw the suspect to contact us.
When Zhou Kai's mother saw him heading towards the front door without a jacket on, she eyed him anxiously.
"Zhou Kai, where are you going?" she asked.
"To the park. I'm going to play football." said Zhou Kai.
"But it's raining! You'll catch a bad cold." said his mother.
"NO. I won't. I'll be fine," said Zhou Kai, as he opened the door.
"Zhou Kai, you'll get ill. You know you will. You can at least go and get your jacket."
"OK.OK. " Zhou Kai went and did as he was told.
Here Is today' s weather report. It will be overcast and drizzly in the morning, with heavy showers around lunchtime. The afternoon will be mostly fine, with occasional cloudy periods. A thin mist will develop over the city centre in the early evening, later turning to fog.
Paris
Paris is the capital and largest city of France, situated on the River Seine. It is one of the most beautiful cities in the world and is visited by more than eight million tourists every year. The most popular place for tourists is the Eiffel Tower, the famous symbol of Paris. One of the world's largest art galleries, the Louvre, is also located in Paris. The city is also famous for its restaurants, cafes and theatres. About two-thirds of France's artists and writers live in Paris.
Athens
Athens, the capital of Greece, is known as the birthplace of western civilization. Two thousand four hundred years ago, it was the world's most powerful city. Buildings such as the Parthenon on the Acropolis Hill were built during this period. Greece's best writers lived in ancient Athens. Their work has influenced other writers ever since.
In Chinese culture, dragons are generous and wise, although they can be unpredictable. The dragon was closely connected to the royal family: the emperor's robes have a symbol of a gold dragon with five claws. According to popular belief, if you were born in the year of the dragon, you are intelligent, brave, and a natural leader. But in the west, dragons had a different reputation. The very first text in English, the Anglo-Saxon poem Beowulf, tells the story of a Scandinavian hero, Beowulf, who fights and kills a dangerous dragon but is himself killed in the fight. However, across the border in Wales, the red dragon which appears on the Welsh flag is a positive symbol.
Another well-known folk dance is the Yangge, which is often performed on special occasions. In many parts of the country, you can see people of all ages dancing in the street during festivals. They are dressed in beautiful costumes, skipping back and forth to the rhythm of loud drums. People like to watch performances of this unique folk dance.
The history of the city goes back 650 years when the Maoris settled in the area. European settlement began in 1840 when the British arrived. New Zealand's first governor, Captain William Hobson, made Auckland the capital. Later the capital moved to Wellington, because it was more central. Since 1945, the city of Auckland had grown and it now has large modern suburbs.
There is no doubt that all this new technology is changing the way we work and offering many other ways of working. Rather than going into an office, a lot of people are connected to the Internet and now work from home. Working like this allows you to live where you want, to continue your studies and to enjoy the comfort of having a lot more free time. However, with all this change, let's hope that it also helps the people in poor countries where slave labour still happens. For the citizens of these nations the future can't arrive soon enough.
Chinese Taikonaut Back on Earth!
While he was travelling in space, Yang spoke to two astronauts aboard the International Space Station, which is orbiting the earth, American astronaut Edward Lu and Russian cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko. Lu, whose parents were born in China, spoke to Yang in Chinese during his flight. "Welcome to space," he said. Malenchenko said, "I am glad there is somebody else in space with us. It's great work by thousands and thousands of people from China."
Many countries around the world sent messages of congratulations. Sean O'Keefe from NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) in the US said that Yang's space flight was "an important historical achievement and NASA wishes China continuing success with its space flight programme". United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan called the flight "a step forward for the whole world".
Ever since the invention of the first telegraph at the end of the 19 century, English has been spreading around the world. It has a power influence in the media, on the internet and in pop music that is not going to go away. This communication revolution has turned the world into a "global village" in which everyone needs to talk to each other--and so often nowadays that means in English.
More people now speak English as a second language across the world than as a native language. It is estimated that 1.3 billion people will use English as either a first or a second language by 2050. But what will that form of English be like? Traditionally, British English has been taught across the world, but it is only one variety. Experts believe that the future shape and grammar of English, especially in its spoken form, will no longer be determined in the traditional English-speaking countries like Britain and America but in the rest of Europe, Asia and Africa.
If you say the word "communication", most people think of words and sentences. Although these are very important, we communicate with more than just spoken and written words. Indeed, body positions are part of what we call "body language". We see examples of unconscious body language very often, yet there is also "learned" body language, which varies from culture to culture.
We use "learned" body language when we are introduced to strangers. Like other animals, we are on guard until we know it is safe to relax. So, every culture has developed a formal way to greet strangers, to show them we are not aggressive. Traditionally Europeans and Americans shake hands. They do this with the right hand--the strongest hand for most people. If our right hand is busy greeting someone, it cannot be holding a weapon. So the gesture is saying, "I trust you. Look, I’m not carrying a threatening weapon." If you shake hands with someone, you show you trust them. We shake hands when we make a deal. It means, “We agree and we trust each other.”
We didn't always live on Mango Street. Before that we lived on Loomis on the third floor, and before that we lived on Keeler. Before Keeler it was Paulina, and before that I can't remember. But what I remember most is moving a lot. Each time it seemed that there'd be one more of us. By the time we got to Mango Street we were six-Mama, Papa, Carlos, Kiki, my sister Nenny and me.
The World Wide Web was invented in 1991 by an English scientist, Tim Berners-Lee. Berners-Lee built his first computer while he was at university using an old television! He came up with the idea of the World Wide Web in 1989 while he was working in Switzerland. Berners-Lee made it possible for everyone to use the Internet, not just universities and the army. He designed the first "web browser", which allowed computer users to access documents from other computers.
#### Wilt the Stilt-the Tower of Power!
Wilt Chamberlain was born in Philadelphia on 21 August 1936. Chamberlain is the only NBA player who averaged over 50 points per game for an entire season. The giant player joined the NBA's Philadelphia Warriors in the 1959-1960 season and was an immediate success. During 14 seasons with four different teams, Chamberlain was named the most valued player in the league four times. On 2nd March 1962, he scored 100 point to a single game--no one has ever done that since! The final score was warriors 169 New York Knicks 147!
Was Wilt Chamberlain better than Michael Jordan? Who knows? But there is no doubt that he deserves the title "outstanding player of his generation".
Michael Jordan was the second player to score more than 3000 points in a season, but the first was Wilt Chamberlain. Chamberlain was born in Philadelphia on 21st August 1936. He was one of the 11 children, the only one who was very tall. His father William worked in a shipyard and his mother Olivia was a cleaner. As a child, Chamberlain had various health problems. He had pneumonia and almost died when he was ten. Chamberlain is the only NBA player who averaged over 50 points per game for an entire season. At one point, Chamberlain was so much better than all the other players that they changed the rules of the game to try to stop him.
Ken has a pet and the pet is a cat. Its name is Ted, and the cat is always catching rats. It is the best.
The second question is about speaking . Wang Fan from Jilin wrote, "Our school has a teacher from the US. I am shy and I am afraid to speak to her. What should I do?"
You can say, "Hello! How are you?" "Do you like China?" These are good ways to start a conversation. And before you begin, you should smile at her! Remember this: Do not be shy. Just try.
The third question is about vocabulary. Zhang Lei from Anhui wrote, "I write down new words, but I forget them quickly. How can I remember them?"
Do not worry. It is natural to forget new words! I suggest you write four or five words a day on pieces of paper and place them in your room. Read the words when you see them, and try to use them.
What's your name? - David.
How old are you? - Thirteen.
He plays tennis. – Tennis?
His eyes are green. – Green?

People often remember what they were doing when they heard the news of important events in history. In America, for example, many people remember what they were doing on April 4, 1968. This was an important event in American history. On this day, Dr. Martin Luther King was killed. Although some people may not remember who killed him, they remember what they were doing when they heard the news.

Millie: Hi, Sandy. Our school is big.
Sandy: Yes, it is. The classrooms are big too.
Simon: Our teachers are nice. Mr. Wu is a good teacher.

They then decide if they will add the words to a new dictionary, depending on how often the word is used by people. They also have to decide if there are words they have to take out of the dictionary. The words they take out are the ones that people do not use anymore. Dictionaries often explain special everyday language. For example, if you wanted to look up the meaning of "Have a nice day", you would look under "nice" or "day". Dictionaries also show how languages change. The sentences, "I'll see you later" became "See you later", then "See you", and now people often just say "Later". The same thing happened to "Yes, please" which is now "please".
I want you to remember the rules for school parties.
Don't wear jeans! If you wear jeans, we won't let you in.
Don't bring food to the party. If you do, the teachers will take it away.
Don't leave the gym during the party. If you do, the teachers will call your parents.
Don't run or shout at the party. If you do, you'll have to leave.
Please bring your ID card. If you don't have your ID card, you can't go to the party.
Jane really likes action movies, and she often goes to see Chinese action movie. She thinks they are very exciting. She thinks documentaries are boring, and she doesn't like thrillers. She often goes to see Beijing Opera with her father.

I often go to movies with my friend, Mike. My favorite actor is Paul Jackson. He has a new movie, My Father's Birthday. It's a very funny comedy. Mike likes the actor Rick Smith. He really likes his movie, Black September. It's a very successful thriller, but I think it's boring. One interesting thing: Mike is English, but he likes Beijing Opera! Mike's father likes it, too.

Lingling's aunt and uncle like watching football on TV at home, but never go to football matches. Which birthday present do you buy for them?
Albert Einstein was one of the greatest minds of the last century. During his lifetime, Einstein thought about the universe and solved many problems in physics. Einstein is most famous for his Theory of Relativity.
Einstein was born in Germany in 1879. After he finished school, he went on to study physics in Switzerland. In 1905, Einstein began to write articles and became a pioneer in the field of modem physics. For one of those articles, he received the Nobel Prize in 1921.
Einstein taught at universities in Switzerland and Germany. He left Germany in 1933 and went to teach at Princeton University in the United States. Einstein died in 1955.He signed his last letter before he passed away. The letter asked people to give up nuclear weapons.

Dear Ms. Wang,
It’s good to hear that you may want to visit Britain. It’s usually warm and there may be a lot of rain. In Britain, it’s very difficult to depend on the weather because it changes a lot. So you can’t plan to have a barbecue very easily. And it might be cold, so you’d better bring a sweater with you. Best of all, there can’t be so many people. You may like to stay in a small hotel-a bed-and-breakfast, or B&B. When you arrive in London, you might like to buy a rail card to travel around the rest of the country. I hope this is useful.
Yours truly,
Sally Marks,
British Tourist Office

He won the Civil War and kept the United States united. He also gave many speeches and wrote many famous letters. He is also famous because he came from a poor family, but through hard work, became President of the United States.

Sandy: Shall we invite them have dinner with us? They can try some Chinese food.
Daniel: Good idea!
Daniel: Where are you going tomorrow? Shall we take Linda to the Summer Palace?
Kitty: I don't think that's a good idea. She went there yesterday.
Daniel: Well, what about the Great Wall?
Kitty: That sounds good, but it's too far away.
Daniel: Why don't we go to the China Science and Technology Museum? It's free for groups of 30 or more students.

Class 9 had a great time on the school trip. They went to Blue Water Aquarium for the day. First they visited the Visitors' Center and watched a movie about sharks. Then they watched a dolphin show. After that, they went to the Outdoor Pool and saw a big octopus. After lunch, they went to the Gift Shop and bought lots of gifts. Finally, tired but happy, they took the bus back to school. At the end of the day, the science teacher was very happy because the class monitor cleaned the bus after the trip.
These days, mobile phones are very common all over the world. In fact, it is thought that in some countries, there are more mobile phones per person than normal telephones. Mobile phones are mostly used to keep in touch with other people. But what makes a good phone?
A mobile phone has many advantages. First of all, it is very small and light, which makes it easy to carry. This is an important feature nowadays.

Dinosaurs lived on earth more than 60 million years before human beings. They lived everywhere on earth. Some dinosaurs were as small as chickens. Others were as big as ten elephants. Some could even fly. Many dinosaurs ate plants. However, some dinosaurs like to eat meat. Dinosaurs lived on earth for more than 150 million years. Then, suddenly, they all died out. Nobody knows why. However, we can learn about them from their fossils.
There were many sections in the exhibition. In the "History Makers" section, there were photographs and videos of famous people and events from the 1960.There was a film about Neil Armstrong walking on the moon, In the "Fashion" section, there were examples of clothes, shoes, hairstyles. etc. Fashion was very strange in the 1960s! In the "Music" section, there were photos and films of great groups from the 60s! --groups like the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. I liked the "Technology" section best. Here, there were things like record players and old TVs and radios. They were really different from the ones we have now!

Once upon a time, there was a fisherman who survived a terrible whirlpool. The reason why I'm here to tell the story is that I made the right decision. When the storm hit, I was still tied to the barrel and the waves soon carried me to an area where the other fishermen were. They couldn't believe what had happened to me, but I told them my story anyway.
